My boat has been at the dealer getting a rebuilt powerhead for the last 3 months with temps in the 70's until 2 weeks ago when it stayed in the lower 30's-40's for 10 days. They finished the instalation 5 days ago and ran it in the water saying everything is fine now. They checked the carbs for junk and said she is ready to roll. My question is...should i treat the fuel? If so, with what? I am really parinoid about another head failure! I want to do everything i can to break the engine in and run it with the best quality fuel and oil. I never really got a definate answer on why the powerhead failed in the first place. Any help is greatly appreciated!

I am assuming it's an O/B, if so you should follow with a 15-20 hour breakin period,ie. vary the speed, don't run at contrant speed for more that 10min. or so and double up on the oil.

Thank you. It is an outboard...200 merc. Should i treat the fuel? And how do i double up on the oil? I asked about disconecting the oil pump and pre-mixing, but they said dont until the 1 year warranty runs out.???????

To double up on the oil you run 50:1 premix and let your oil injection run as normal at 50:1, you will then be running at 25:1 during your break in period. Premix at 1 gallon oil to 50 gallons of fresh fuel. Better luck with this one.

You double up on oil by adding oil to the fuel tank @50/1 ratio.Since you have a VRO you get the double mix.I don't believe in other fuel additives, except when storing, you add stabilizer. If you have a fuel/water seperator, check and open the drain valve as necessary when you see water. You will have to calculte how much fuel is now in the tank, then how much you need to add at the proper ratio. You don't have to fill the tank, only 20hours of fuel.I like to add the oil 1st, then the gas, it does a better mix. Hope this helps. One thing to remember is that on a VRO the ratio varies 50/1 to 100/1 depending on speed, therefore during breakin you will always be burning a little more oil no matter what speed, She will smoke a little more, so after breakin change to clean plugs.
