Was just browsing some other forums and came across a question about a boater's A/C problems. This struck me as odd - what kind of boats have a/c?

Do you mean Air Conditioning, or Alternating Current? Well, I guess it doesn't matter, 'cause lots of boats have one or the other, and many have both! Air Conditioning is really not too uncommon, especially in the south. Alternating current is as simple as an inverter, sometimes even a little 500 watt portable one.

sorry - I do mean air conditioning. I guess I need to expand my horizons - living in a small town in northern BC - I can't see much need for air conditioning as just being on the water is cooling enough. When I think about it though, I guess - yeah the southern states would be a lot hotter.

Water temp in the Gulf of Mexico is 90 degrees F today. Air temp at Lake Mead is 116 F today . . . ;)

what's "F"? LOL! - just kidding.:)

let's see - according to the internet 90 F = 32 C???!!!???! When I have a shower the water isn't even that hot!

and 115 F = 46 C???!!!?? We've had some 32-33 C (90 F or so :)) days here this summer and I can't imagine what 46 would be like. Does everyone take the day off and hunker down in their basements? or maybe head out on the water in air conditioned boats? :D

But I've heard it's not the temp, it's the humidity.....:):D

Cabin cruisers and house boats generaly come now days with AC. Would kind of be unfeasible on an open type boat, but you might be a redneck if your jon boat has AC.

You'd expect to find AC in almost every boat over 26' that has a cabin.

Normally, we just sweat and tell each other it is better than freezing our butts off up North.

Yes, in the East, but never on the West coast . . . ;) Inland lakes, yes, but very few on the Big Water here.

Usually boats only use the A/C when at the dock and hooked up to shore power. Most small houseboats and such don't have generators to power the A/C while away from the dock.

Re: Boats have A/C???

Every thing of a size I work on has multiple AC units, some have chiller systems. Of course, I work on large yachts.....

Marine AC uses sea water instead of air to cool the condensing unit. THis necessitates a thru hull (or several depending on the number of units) and a pump to move the water. Much like central air in your home, the condensing units are below deck and the air handlers are in whatever space is being cooled. There are very sophisticated digital thermostats along with this.

No, someone is not going to buy a three million dollar Hatteras yacht and stick a bunch of Fedders window units out the sides with 2X4's propping them up.:p

You do see RV style roof units on some houseboats, but they rarely see rough weather or salt water. That would kill them.
