I don't care much for bobbers. If I can fish my bait in the place and way that I want to without a bobber, that's preferable to me. But if I do have to use a bobber, I always use the smallest one I can. Not because I think the profile of it scares away the fish, but the splash a large bobber makes when cast can make a difference.

In saltwater if I can do without a bobber I typically go that way. Sometimes bobbers are a good way to go. I don't really use them for a notification that I am getting a bite, i just use it to keep my bait off the sea floor. This is really only the case when I am fishing off of a seawall in a canal and I can't drop the line straight down. It can really come in handy in these scenarios.

Bobber does bring some good ole nostalgia though ;)

A big live herring under a balloon is fun to watch when a striper gets on the scent, you never see a balloon move that fast.
Its usefull to keep the herring out of the rocks along deep rocky shorlines where lunkers hide.

Bobber? No. But, a popping cork is another story. We catch trout by the boat load by soaking a live shrimp under a popping cork.
