I am about to purchase a Bobs exhaust housing kit for my 1994 Mercury 175hp XRI 2.5L Black Max. I know it doesn't help much with power or anything but I am just looking for a little extra sound and still be able to plug it off if I want it quiet.
Question is, can I just drill into the mid and on into the exhaust can when I install this bolt on housing kit? I am trying to figure out how to get some more noise without having to pull the powerhead and all that other stuff. Does anyone have any pictures or sound/video clips of the kit installed on an outboard? I was also worried about weakening the midsection and cracking it but after doing some research thats the reason you drill several smaller holes instead of 2 big ones, it helps it retain some strength. This is just on a bass boat and I don't drive it as hard as some people, and I take it easy in the rough water.

Gee, Why not skip the kit so you can better sneak up on the fish? Seriously, why do you want to add more sound to the water?

I figure there is already as much noise going into the water thru the prop. Its loud as crap out of water on the muffs. Letting some of the noise out above the water probably wouldn't make any difference to the fish. I also use the boat as a pleasure boat for just riding around and I pull my fiance on a tube with it so when I am playing I can leave the exhaust unplugged and when fishing plug it off. I usually kill the motor about 100yds from my fishing hole and use trolling motor the rest of the way too.

Why would you spend the money to do this. unclear on the reasoning.
they are all loud as crap on muffs.
Don't get it.??
Merc spent alot of money on R&D to keep motors quiet.

Re: Bobs exhaust housing

I want to spend the $56.99 for the same reason so many people like myself put flowmasters on their pickup trucks or hotrods. Some people like the sound and I like the sound of a V6 2 stroke. Thats the only reason. I am a horsepower nut and I like to hear the engine. Like I said I can put the plugs in the exhaust if I want it quiet or it sounds awful. What I meant about loud on the muffs was in a post above someone mentioned it would scare the fish away and I was meaning that the motors are loud on the muffs so when its in the water all that sound you hear on the muffs is going into the water and scaring the fish anyway. I would just like some information on installing the kit and if anyone has one installed on their motor how do you like it etc.

mtnman05.. It comes with instructions and if I remember correctly you do have to punch the exhaust can along with midsection...
