took the boat out ran fine, stopped anchored down hung out a little bit, got in boat started it up took off cutting across water and would bog down at higher speed but mostly when hit big wave? i've heard could be fuel filter, or just needs a tune up..i changed the spark plugs when i got it, hooked it up to water ears, fired up good but have not ran on water yet. any idea what could cause the bogging? thank you:confused:

Start at fuel filter. Running boat in the water and "loading" the engine is a whole other animal than muffs. Fuel starvation is the best place to start. After that if it still does it look at timing. If it's points ignition check those. If it pops and sputters through the carb that's a sign of fuel or timing issue.

Did you let it warm up after you launched it? If not, it probably ran fine the first 5 minutes because the choke was still somewhat on.

Re: bogging down at high RPMs

it warmed up a little before i took off yes, started off 10mph then 15, 20..then got up to 30mph - 4000rpm ran fine..drove it around a bit , then it started the bogging down loss of power..another thing is if i throttle down and leave it let it bog it will catch and the motor will full power again but just keeps repeating but i can slow back down to around 15mph and cruise perfectly fine..any ideas on that?

Do you have a gas/water seperator? You problem sounds fuel related. Try changing your seperator if you have one. Regards

Fuel circuit start at the pick up tube in the tank and work your way back to the carb cleaning and checking for loose connections. Could be vent, pick up screen, anti siphon valve, filters pressure but most likely carb needing rebuilt plugged jet!

I am having the same problem with my volvo penta. We have changed the fuel filter and have added seafoam to the gas. We are still having the same problem any suggestions??????

Re: bogging down at high RPMs

Carb needs fuel to make engine run. When no demand for fuel like when putting around or idling the poor fuel flow is enough. When you "gas" it the fuel in the carb fuel bowl is used faster than the system is pumping when restricted. Runs a min then sputters out. I've found bugs in my pickup tube in the tank, clogged filters, and everything in between. Check it all
