Hello everyone, First, thanks in advance for help in solving my problem

I need ya'lls help!
I have a 1997 Merc 4.3 with an Alpha 1. Last year I had a problem with cold starts on my boat. The first start of the day it would take an extended time to start but would eventually start. Once in the water I would let it idle for about 5 minutes then drive off slowly. While idleing through the no wake zone it ran fine. However, once outside the wake I would throttle up and it would bogg down and almost cut out, but never died and ran fine after that. Then a couple times on the last day out it died when I throttled back to pick up my skier. It started right back up and would idle fine.
I had the boat winterized at my local boat shop for the winter and he said he noiticed it was runnign rough.

This year I unwinterized the boat, pulled all the plugs and changed them. The plugs that came out looked pretty good; no white spots, no oil, not wet, and not too far out of gap. The plug wires look great and the ditributor cap does as well. The boat started after putting a little gas in the carb and it ran about 10 seconds then died. I cranked it and it started again and would die. This repeadely happened. I would try to throttle only it up and it would do the same. I let it sit for about 5 miuntes while I was checking hte choke and then I started it, it ran for about 45 seconds, the died. I pulled the oil/water seperator and it had fuel in it and it looked fine. I started it and aging it ran about 45 seconds and died, I'm thinking carb??????????
But ya'll have more experience than I, so please help me figure this out.!!!

Which carb is it? The 2 bbl is a MerCarb and the 4 bbl is a Weber. From wha I remember about the MerCarb, they are not that difficult to do, and the Webers I can (and often do) in my sleep :D:D:D:D

There is also a known problem on the electric fuel pumps... The connector at the top can vibrate loose. Just give it a push down to make sure it's on all the way.

Download the manual HERE and follow it step by step, real easy....

The Carb is the two bbl. It is a good swap to put the 4 bbl on it?

It sounds to me like a fuel pump problem, but at the same time I would replace the fuel filter and see what happens.

You would need to change the intake manifold too... You'll get another 30hp... Do you need it?

HP are like inches, a few extra is never a bad thing. However, I do not need 30 HP at the expense of replacing the intake. I pulled the Merc manual and I'm going to try the rebuild first. Well... that is after I check the fuel pump!

Thanks for everyone's help. I'll post the results for others that might be dealing with this problem.

Re: Bogging down I/O 4.3 Merc

I'm back with more details.
I went ahead and had the Merc carb rebuilt and was told that everything looked good. I put it on added some gas and a little starter fluid and it started right up. It ran for a few seconds and died. I let it run for about 3-4 minutes and it idled fine. I went and put it in gear and it died. I started it back up and it ran for a few seconds and died. It would not run on it's own again. I disconected the throttle so I could do it manually and gas would come out the jet. It tried to keep it running and could do so on starter fuild but as soon as the fluid was out it died.

Today I put a fuel pressure tester in line between the fuel pump and the carb, NO pressure or gas came out of the line. I pulled the fuel pump and ran a 12 volt power source to it and you could hear it working but I did not have a fuel source to it so I'm not sure if it was "pumping". I put the fuel pump back on and ran 12v power source to it and you could here it for a few seconds, then silent. I took the power off and then put it back on and nothing. I let it sit for a minute and tried it again it ran for a second or two then silent. the third time it spit a little gas out of the end of the tube at the carb. but then nothing.

Thoughts about what is going on?

2 thoughts...

STOP using starter fluid! If you really need to throw something down the carb, make it petrol.

Replace the fuel pump.

Re: Bogging down I/O 4.3 Merc

I want to thank everyone for their help. Put the new fuel pump and fuel filter and ti ran but rough. I then took it to a mechanic and paid him to rebuild the Carb correctly (not sure I trusted my friend) and the boat is ready for water. Again thanks for the advice all!!!!

I'm getting a real bad case of anal glaucoma for tomorrow's workday. I just don't see my butt coming into work.
