Boggs down under load

'74 OMC 165 GM L6 (New motor) on a '74 Grady White 212 Chesapeake -- Holley 4bbl and elec. ignition<br /><br />Coming back into port from the Gulf on Saturday, we were running through some 3'-4' waves. When I'd hit a wave, the engine would really bog down and I would have to back off the throttle and start powering back up again. After about 15 minutes of this, it started running a little bit rough. Ran smooth as silk at low RPMs, but trying to power through the waves was not pretty. Never felt like she was going to die on me, but sure didn't like having to back off the throttle...<br /><br />Any ideas? What other information can I give you to get some help?<br /><br />Thanks in advance!

Sounds like fuel starvation. Perhaps you have water in your fuel and the waves are sloshing the water around in your fuel bowls starving the engine for fuel by replacing fuel with water. Run some isopropyl alcohol in the next few fill ups and replace your water separating fuel filter with a new one. Get another as a spare while you are filter shopping too...

I had the same sort of thing occur to me. I replaced the fuel filter, but the problem would still occur. I noticed it always happened when it was rough or I was driving into large waves. What was happening was that the seas were throwing lots of water at my engine compartment. Water was trickling through the seams on the hinge and right on to my ignition system. It would cause the engine to sort of sputter. The faster I went the more water I took the worse it got. Just somthing else to keep in mind.

Cool... Thanks...<br /><br />Given the age of the carb on there and the negative or unreliability of rebuilding, I think I just might have to get a new carb... I'd rather not "fool around" with trying to tune, fix, or rebuild this one. I was hoping you would all say fuel!!!
