Does anyone have any tips for extracting bolts with broken heads. A majority of the screws, nuts, and bolts have excessive mineral deposites on them. I have tried penatrating oil, heating with a torch, hitting with a hammer, and yelling curse words at it and have had no success. I broke one off in the head and am trying to ket it out.

Help

Evinrude trouble

Re: Bolt extraction problem

Do a search on these forums for broken bolts.
Here's my 2 cents worth.
Don't use EZ-outs on a marine engine. The grip of corrosion often exceeds the torque limit of the EZ-out and you will have to learn how to extract extractors.

Learn to use heat and lots of it when removing bolts. When they break anyway:

If possible have someone weld a nut onto the top of the broken bolt.

If thats not an option, get a good set of drill bits and a center punch and drill out the broken bolt. Usually you will have to install a helicoil kit (which allows you to use the original OEM diameter bolt).

I find it handy to have a Dremel tool and a carbide tipped tile grout remover bit for fine work such as recentering a hole.

Now you know why the marine mechanic has such a colorful vocabulary and charges so much. :D
