Hey folks. Finally my 2 year rebuild on my xr4 is getting finished. Its been sitting in my living room with crank and pistons in it for a long time. Today I would like to bolt the case back together. THe merc manual says to use a tube of gasket stuff and the strip gasket but when I took this motor apart there was just the gasket and no goo. Any recommendations? just go with gasket only, or use some goo too? Thanks everyone!!

Use Mercury's Perfect Seal, you can also use it on prop shaft - gaskets and bolts.

I use Loctite 518 and very sparingly directly on top of the cork gasket. I put a little extra dab at the ends. FYI, the sealant was there but it's a flange and the fit is very precise so most of it squeezes out and only a very thin, nearly invisible layer remains.
