I'm replaceing the stringers in a 20' baja. What should I use to bond the new stringers to the hull? resin & mat?

Re: bonding stringers to hull

Considering that none of the boat mfgs bond them down first I don't think it is necessary to bond to the hull for strength. Glassing takes care of that. However, I glue them to the hull first just to make them more stable for glassing.

klos, I would bond the stringers to the hull using some resin and mat. If I had any doubt about how strong it needed to be I would use epoxy resin for the extra strength. My reasoning: If the stringer moves from the spot it is needed, the hull will be prone to cracking at that spot.

Re: bonding stringers to hull

ive been using the west systems for my project and i used the high density 404 TO BOND MY STRINGERS IN THE END ,,,,,,,,,ACTualy i baught 5 of the 405 fillet blend and used them first ,,,but they only sell those in the small cans ,,,i also baught a big can of the 404 and in the end i needed it ........from now on in my project i will only be using the 404 as it works very good ....i wanted it to be thick and wide where the stringer meets the hull .....its so solid now i dont realy need the cloth :D but im adding it any way ....

Ayuh,.........
While that may Seems to be Very True,.........

It's all that Cloth that Spreads the Loads,+ Stresses out over a Foot,+1/2 Wide area up thru the length of the hull.............

Kinda like putting a Gusset in a Corner.......... ;)

I use polyester if glassing with polyester and epoxy if glassing with epoxy. It is only to tack them down so they don't move while glassing. I don't rely on it for anything else...that's what the glass is for. Even the expensive high end wave jumping ocean boats don't glue or bond their stringers or bulkheads to the hull before glassing. In fact, production boats like Pursuit put a 1/2" foam spacer under the stringer to let the glass spread the load...the stringer doesn't even touch the hull. Do whatever makes you feel good but if you glass stringers properly there is no worry. It's like glassing between transom layers...that isn't done either.
