The block on my '79 Evinrude 140 appears to have only one cylinder with damage severe enough to warrant boring. Although it's most cost effective to rebore this one cylinder, replace the piston with an oversize piston, and button it back up.........is this a practice you would recommend for long term use?Should I consider sleeving the cylinder to match the other 3 and keep all cylinders the same diameter? If not, please explain. Thanks.................. ALAN

P.S....... I can't locate a 5/16 twelve point deep socket locally. The manual say's this is required for the removal of the rod caps. Is there an alternate meathod of removal? Can I replace these cap screws with a screw head other than this "special" star-head type so that if/when I have to do this again, I won't have to go on a man hunt for this lone socket again? Thanks again........... ALAN

Re: Boring only one hole.........?

some time back, i rebuilt a '79 evinrude 85 that had one cylinder bad was advised from iboats guys that it is common practice to bore only one hole. the new oversized pistons are supposed to be the same weight as the stock size.
Brother, i feel your pain in locating that 5/16 12pt deep socket. i don't think there's a better way to do it than to just find a 5/16 12pt deep socket. i finally found one at sears, after i checked all the auto parts stores in town, the hardware stores and home improvement stores. Good luck!
