besides my larson project boat, i have a 1970 boston whaler 13. i love this boat. we do everything w/ it. we fish from it tube behind it and skii behind it. its stble, powerful, and it handles great. but i have heard ppl describe whalers as unstable, horrible handling, and worst of all, over priced foam coolers. i thnk they are the best boats in the world, but whts your opion of the brand?

I'm with you. The others are just jealous. If they were that bad, they would be around, and envied (yes i have a 13; since it was new in 1964)

Re: boston whaler opions

Spent the summers at the cottage on Lake Erie. There was a group of us and we all had boats.Lone Stars, Starcrafts,Glastrons,Hydroplanes,Owens, Lyman,Buehler jet and even a OMC.One bud had a 13' Boston and that boat took a beating like none of the others would even think about. We would take it out in 5-7 footers and try to sink it.Some of those waves by the reefs scared the hell out of me.The bow would be pointing at the sky and the front seat would come flying back at us,never flipped it but damn close many a time. We would completly fill it with water then just open the plug and jerk the throttle to get it to water out. I do not own one now but that boat is forever eched in my mind after 44 years have gone by.Much respect for the Whaler

I've got a 60's vintage 13ft whaler with 15 yammie four stroke. What a fun stable little boat. Leaning on the gunnel I've pulled crab traps with over 20 crabs and took no water. We also have an 18ft. 1985 Outrage, full transom, Armstrong bracket, custom T Top, and a 03 Zuke 140 four stroke. What an incredible boat. Trustworthy, dependable, operator friendly. We've been the smallest boat out on many nasty days. Trailerable, easy to retrieve. I can't say enough about this great boat. It ain't all spit and polish, but we've used it alot, and still we get compliments at the ramps. The only downside is I've much more in it than I could ever get back, but I have no intention of ever selling it. I agree with HomeCookin, they're all jealous!!!

Wow, I've never heard anyone denigrate Whalers before. Maybe you're hanging with the wrong crowd.

I'm a big fan of Whalers; have had 2 over the years and they were awesome boats! I had my 16' Whaler out in water I'd never take my current 26' boat out in....and felt safe. Anybody that doesn't like a Boston Whaler has never had one.

Re: boston whaler opions

I'd like to go for a ride in a Whaler one day to see what the fuss is about. I've heard they are a wet ride due to the low freeboard and can pound due to the lack of V, true? They sure look cool.

Re: boston whaler opions

Whalers don't have a particularly low freeboard for their length; many boats have the same, or more, or less.

The spray is determined by the boat's design at the water line, chines on the side or other deflectors, and the design of the underside of the gunwale or rub rail. Whalers are well designed in this regard, with a turned-over edge at the rub rail. They will, however, throw more water out front than a V running in chop, which will sometimes spray back in a head wind. But with what is essentially a modified tri-hull, that effect is less than a comparable boat with a flat front (like a jon or J series carolina skiff).

The ride will be bumpier than a V in some circumstances. You won't know the difference comparing two small boats; that's a myth. The larger boats get that reputation because it's a boat you can take out when it's rough. So what if it's not as smooth? What are you there for? No one get "beat to death" or "teeth knocked out" riding in one. You're merely comparing a landcruiser to a buick sedan as far as that difference goes.

Whalers are a boater's boat. It's like the "drivers v. passengers" ad. If your idea of "boating" is just riding on a floating sofa on smooth water, you aren't boating and you might not like a whaler. or beer, or steak, or football, or power tools.

Re: boston whaler opions

I love my 25' Temptation.
It has a cabin and plenty of deck space for fishing!
Dual 150hp Evinrudes
I'm in the process of putting on a hardtop with full enclosure for her. She has a bimini now.
I've never had nothing but compliments at the ramp.

Whalers are know to be "unsinkable" so you can't argue there.

Re: boston whaler opions

I have had seven Boston Whalers. The least wonderful of them was a far better boat than any other in its size range.

The 1981 Montauk 17 was the most versatile, the 1985 Striper 15 was the smoothest and the 1973 Sport 13 the most fun. The 1966 Sakonnet (see avatar) was the prettiest and drew the biggest crowds at ramps and marinas. The Tender 11 and the two Outrage 18s (first generation) were good boats, but at the outer limits of what a fisherman wants.

They were all selected for fishing. Some for sheltered fresh water, some for offshore and a couple for all waters. The Sport 13, Heidi Yawl, and the Striper 15, RED SKY were my favorites on Lake Of The Woods (my idea of sheltered waters) but my fishing partner whined about getting sprayed. He loved the Montauk 17 (Sunshine III, now owned by Ryanwhaler).

All were used and then sold for what I paid for them or more.

There are other good boats, but Whalers are in a class by themselves.

That thing is a piece-of-garbage death trap! You need to dump it as soon as you can!

When can I come and take it off your hands?

I had a whaler with a 40 yamy and steering when in St.Thomas VI..

Never a doubt going around that rock with that thing..bump and burn..fun fun :) ..

Blue water crossings .. nope..but island hopping so much fun and stable..

Dad bought a new '68 model Sakonnet (with an '85 'Rude) in late '67. In 1980 he gave it to me (thanks Dad!) and I kept it for almost 10 years before it was passed along to another family member to help get them into boating. Have owned a few boats since then (including a 17 Montauk which really was a fantastic all around boat) but the 16 is still my favorite. I learned many boating (and life) lessons in that boat. Classic Whaler; the absolute epitome of small craft IMO.

They are very nice boats.
The only drawbacks I can think of are cost~they are pricey after all
And the weight. I considered trying to put one on a truck rack for fishing lakes. Just to heavy for that application.
I can remember as a teen watching the factory cut one in half with a chain saw. This set the guy in the front of the boat with the saw adrift. Then the guy in the back of the boat fired up the motor and ran circles around the front of the boat.
That was many years ago.
