bought a boat this winter and the bottom is already painted. it was only used one season with this the paint. before that is was a fresh water boat. the paint looks good. no chipping, scratches or any of that. do i really need to paint it again? im assuming it should be good but i dont want to take any chances. also im thinking of naming the boat "MY GUMADA" which in slang italian means "the girl on the side" or the other girl. married men would have a gumada. i guess mine is my boat. i need some feedback cause once i name it i cant change it. what do you think about the paint and the name?? thanks in advance

Do you know what type of paint it is? It is generally considered that there are 2 kinds of bottom paints; Anti-Fouling Hard and Anti-Fouling Ablative. Generally for a planing hull, you will use a hard paint. You will probably be fine if the boat is not generally stored in the water

Was the boat stored on a trailer or in the water for the past year? reason I ask is that many bottom paints loose their anti-fouling effectiveness if left exposed to air too long.. if you are going to keep your boat on a trailer or lift, then it doesn't matter, but if you keep your boat in the water and it has not been kept in the water the past year, then the paint, tho looking good, may not have any anti-fouling properties left in it...as for the name, I guess most of the guys on this forum think of their boats like that... :)

I re-paint mine every year.

Haha yes I power wash most of it off first after I take it out after the seasons over so Im not left with an inch of paint and a second hull. :D

Angie, If the paint is ablative, I would use it until the barnacles start to adhere. If the paint is not-ablative, I would still use it until the barnacles start to adhere. The good news is that boat paints are soft and any barnacles can be brushed off. You may repaint at that time.

Use ablative paint in the future, when you need it. It is multi season (ie until the barnacles start to adhere), and doesn't lose it's AF ability when out of the water.
