bottom paint against the gimbal

Just bought a 1999 wellcraft 2600 the bottom was painted by the previous owner at pier 47 in wildwood with interlux act black. They did not leave a gap of an inch around the bravo 3. I assume I should try and strip off the bottom paint around the outdrive so contact is eliminated. Any suggestions how to stip the paint. Also the out drive was supposedly clear coated with something as well. Any ideas what it would be cleared with and is this proper ?

laquer thinner will remove the bottom paint but you may want to be careful not to remove any you want to keep

tape may work but the thinner may "run" under it

clear coated eh??

i've seen outdrive painted with all kinds of different stuff, even bottom paint - jeeze

its not proper to paint an outdrive with anything but gloss spray paint, the mercathode/anodic protection is what is used to protect the drive from corrosion

laquer sounds better than razor blades n sand paper. any guess why a marina who boasts knowledge and good service would paint to the gimbal?

I assume everyone thinks its needs removed from the gimbal?

any other suggestions?

Re: bottom paint against the gimbal

My boat was like that and it didn't really cause corrosion to the transom mount, but what I'd do is remove the bottom paint around the transom mount, use an aluminum friendly paint , first paint a 1" border around the transom mount with Primocon (Interlux's primer for aluminum bottom paint), put on 3 coats and then put on 2 coats of Trilux II which is a bottom paint that is safe for aluminum. It would be best to remove the old copper based paint but if you can't then painting it with the Primocon first will isolate the copper from the aluminum which is what you want to do.

I don't know of any clear paints for outdrives that are still legal to use, I have used Trilux II and it works OK in salt water but you must brush on multiple coats, the spray is too thin to last the season.

Re: bottom paint against the gimbal

To update I removed the bottom paint around the transom housing mount (not gimbal my bad) with interlux interstrip as recommended by Jim at anchor marine. It worked ok but many coats were needed and its is safe for the gelcoat. When I asked about using laquer thinner he states it may harm the gelcoat.

thanks for the help!

Dont worry .. laq thinner will not harm gelcoat.

Matter of fact..I really dont know what does harm gelcoat..unless is some Powerfull stripper ( its a shame they dont sell that Good stuff anymore ;) ). Acetone is your best bet for cleaning.

YD.
