My (virgin) boat bottom needs to have a bottom paint.<br />What would you recommend (primer, antifouling, how many coatings, etc.). Boat is fiberglas and used on fresh water only.<br /><br />How much is the whole job usually ?<br />Also, is there white or light grey bottom paint available ?<br /><br />Thanks a lot, Tom

Do you keep the boat in the water for long periods of time, (like all summer)? If not, you don't need an antifouling paint. If you only use it on weekends when the weather nice, then most 2 part paints will hold up just fine. <br />The cost, well, we don't know how big the boat is. <br />Colors, any one you want.

sorry, the boat is 20ft. long.<br /><br />Yes, I will keep it on the water.

First clean the bottom with acetone to remove any wax even if you've never waxed it. They use wax as a release agent when laying-up the hull.<br />Next you have two options. Sand with 80 grit paper or paint with a fiberglass no paint primer.<br />Read and use the directions if you go the primer route.<br />Then use the paint of your choice. <br />I suggest to use a multi year anti fouling paint.<br />Yes, it's expensive, but believe me, it's worth it for not having to repaint it the following year. And actually the cost comes out to be the same as painting it every year.<br />It's a messy job. By some latex gloves. Use rollers and a brush to reach the tuff to get to spots. <br />Yes, they make a light grey paint. <br />It's gonna cost you about $175 in supplies. If you buy a gallon there should be enough for another coat in 2 years.
