Ok so this boat i recently purchased has some kind of thick and rough bottom coat dont know if its paint its thick and reminds me of nonskind but not as stong anyway alot of it has started chipping and fading and i would like to either redo it it the same stuff or remove it and apply something more appropriate . I trailer my boat and wont spend more then a day or two on in the water . the waters i get into are all three fresh, salt, and brackish mostly brackish.
im just wondering what you pros reccomend and how i should go about it

Re: bottom paint question

I am using Pettit's EasyPoxy topside paint as bottom paint. My boat is a 14 foot fiberglass tri-hull.

I was assured by Pettit in an email that if left to cure for 7 days before putting it on the trailer and if the boat will not be in the water for more than 2 days, its good for bottom paint.

Anti-fowling paint has lots of copper flakes in it. Marine life hate the taste of it so they go attach themselves to other things. I worked on a yacht a few months ago that had old anti-fowling on it and it flaked off like you describe.

I just rolled on the third and last coat of Electric Blue EasyPoxy. This is great stuff but I am concerned that after the 2nd coat set for three days in the hot sun the paint was still easy to put a scratch in.

Good luck with that. My experience with it has shown it's garbage paint.

Re: bottom paint question

Looks to me like ablative anti-fouling paint which could be removed with paint remover or sanding. Either way you may get by with just sanding your way from 320 grit up to 1200 grit and buffing. Some others may give you a better idea with more detail.

Re: bottom paint question

Appears to be painted over the boot stripe which I would assume you are going to remove and replace. A good paint scraper should take alot of it off as the bottom may not have been preped correctly for the anti fouling paint to stick (which is good for you). Careful not to scratch your bottom which appears to be of good gel-coat. If she were mine..... I would try avoiding painting the bottom if you find the gel-coat to be in good order. Good kuck, I think you will be happy with your efforts.

Re: bottom paint question

I removed my antifouling paint which looked similar to yours and I used Easy-Off oven cleaner. I tried paint strippers, sanding, power sanding, etc., and by far Easy-Off was the best. I wore gloves, kept it off my skin, didn't let it set for more than 20 minutes, and scrubbed with a green kitchen pad, then rinsed. Be forewarned, it is a GIANT PITA!!!

Watched a video on youtube about Peel-Away. They
make it look like a miracle. I am curious to know about anybody that has tried it too.
