I have a 27' SeaRay Sundancer that was bottom painted by the previos owner using hard paint. I use the boat in salt water but, keep it in a lift. I would like to repaint the bottom using a "slicker" finish. I was told that there is a new paint on the market (not an anti-fouling paint) that may be used to paint over existng botttom paint. Is anyone familiar with the product? My goal is to improve the fuel economy of the boat. If such a product does not exist, what would be the best product to use to achieve better performance?

Re: Bottom Paint

I realy doubt that you will see any performance difference after repainting your hull, only if it were really bad!! Racers say that a really slick hull will actually slow them dowm, Ive heard of them actually sanding the pad area to create more speed, something to do with introducing air!

Re: Bottom Paint

You may want to go to the Interlux Paint website and look for a bottom paint that contains Teflon.
It is a much harder finish and is recommended for speed boats, but there is a drawback.
Because the finish is harder, it is also harder to keep it clean, because the paint does not release as easily as regular bottom or antifouling paint. I have used the hard paint and found that if you clean it more often, it will help a little bit.
