This is a bit more complex. This pic shows me that your down to fiberglass.
fetch

You can scrape, sand and repaint and it will look better but this is not the way to go for a long lasting repair. If you do not keep your boat in the water, repairs can be easier, but if it sits in the water for the season then you need to go another way. For discussion I'm going with keeping the boat in the water.

Get the boat off the trailer and on blocks or stands. Sand, scrape and/or soda blast down to the barrier coat. If boat does not have barrier coat applied then need to get it down to the gelcoat.

Once down apply at least 3 coats of epoxy barrier coat. Then apply at least 3 coats of bottom paint in the color and type of your choice.

If that is gelcoat under the paint then my guess is barrier coat was not used or was not put on correctly. Your back to sand and scrape it down to gelcoat and apply as per my previous comment.

Paint remover called peel-away can get you down to the gelcoat without too much scraping, as to much pressure on the scraper will tend to dig into the gelcoat.

Then interlux Interprotect barrier coat, 2-3 coats. Then anti-fouling of your choice. I use ePaint Eco-friendly paint (ePaint EP-2000)

The pic isn't much better, if its white then its gelcoat, if its clear to yellow then its glass. The paint remover is a great idea.

You might even try a high powered pressure washer. With the paint starting to peel and chip away, a washer might get most of it. After wards you will still need to rough it up prior to using barrier coat. I would suggest a dual action (DA) sander with 80 grit. Don't use a circle sander, it can dig in way to fast. Have also used a bet sander but DA would be my choice.

Plan to do similar this fall on my cruiser

That's gelcoat, and appears to me that who ever did the job did not do it correctly. This is why the paint is peeling. The good news it's peeling, the bad is it needs to all come off so it can be barrier coated first before, bottom paint image_227467.jpg

so i am about to start stripping my bottom paint off, my question is ; can i leave bottom of boat with no bottom paint only gelcoat on bottom of boat exposed over the winter and put barrier shield and bottom paint on in spring or will exposed bottom get ruined over northeastern winter?

Always best to ask, I to am asking questions about gelcoat spraying (never done it before), always did it with a brush, hope to get more questions answered before I start. Happy sanding (cough, gasp, weeze) ;)
