Bottom Pop-ups - What's Up?

OK - I cry UNCLE. I always say I don't have the bottom pop-up . Guess what. I can't say that anymore. Yesterday it was KEEN feet, today it's Husqvarna. Every page I go to. Excessive is an understatement. XP with FF up to date with pop-ups disabled and ever instance of Java disabled. Tried IE8, perfect.

Are we having a problem with FF and the forum?

EDIT - Changed EI8 to IE8

That seemed to work-I just downloaded Adblock Plus 2.2.3 and I don't see the ads now. But that happened when I disabled the Java Console, then they came back. We'll see if it sticks this time.

Again, none with IE9.

Thanks, Summer Fun.

I never used an add-on blocker, so nothing to update. And the pop-ups happened once a day, when I opened iboats and never had them through the day. Something has changed to the point of insanity.

Still working, so this seems to be a solution.

Re: Bottom Pop-ups - What's Up?

You guys most have those ads built into your computer. I normally use Google Chrome with an ad blocker and never see any ads. I turned it off this morning, and got all the ads except the popup coming up from the bottom, I logged out, emptied cookies and cache files and still no popup. So just for fun I went to IE10, Nothing, just like Chrome, no popups. I even checked the the IE built in popup block is turned off.

That would be your loss, why don't you just get an ad blocker as has been explained in this and the Non boating tech topics forum about a thousand times?

Yup, this forum is too valuable for me to give up over a few annoying pop-ups, that can be defeated one way or another.

"why don't you just get an ad blocker"

Kinda defeats the purpose of having the ads in the first place if everyone installs an ad blocker. So with that, why not just stop the ads popping up. I mean..seriously...these things can be tracked. I know they can cuz I am the guy that can design this stuff and I understand SEO along with web design, advertising, and marketing. Track the ads...if most here are blocking, or the ads are not generating revenue, stop them. It's pretty simple really.

I come here, not only for advice (give and take), but to buy things from iboats. If iboats want to lose that following and the revenue generated in other areas, they should keep doing things that aggravate their following.

A banner ad across the top is fine and a good place for it, but the annoying popping up has got to go. Read on;

Internet advertisers take note: You don't need to hawk your wares with a zillion pop-up ads when really just five or six are enough, according to a new industry report.

"People are seeing as many as 50 of the same ads in one day. This doesn't really work and it's not good use of advertising dollars," said Young-Bean Song, director of analytics for advertising technology company Atlas DMT.

The point being, a site can cookie the user so that the dang pop up doesn't pop up every time the user changes the page. I have to log in with a name and password...at least cater the pop ups to me. It ain't rocket science.

Re: Bottom Pop-ups - What's Up?

First off, I'm not leaving over this. I guess I'm more upset about the inconsistency of the bottom pop-ups. No pop-ups for weeks or months to once a day when others are complaining, and now every time a forum page is opened.

I'll say nothing has changed on my end, so it must be the iboats end. I have no trouble anywhere else, just here. In the three days since I opened this thread, I've cycled through the P-U on every new page, to none, to occasional and now back to every page again. That's the inconsistency I'm referring to.

I'm about to update to FF 20. No idea if it will help.

EDIT - My complaint isn't about presence of the pop-up, it's that I end up opening it. I don't close it and continue to read the thread. But when I reply or want to go to the next, I mistakenly click on it because it has no border to define the edges.

Re: Bottom Pop-ups - What's Up?

Alexander Hamilton said, Those who stand for nothing fall for anything. That said, voicing your dislike over something and then not doing anything about it allows anyone to walk all over your beliefs. You know the pop ups are wrong and you don't like them and you do things to avoid them, but when it comes to making a stand you (you generically speaking) back off. Maybe it's my 60's upbringing, but if I don't like something and believe it's wrong/annoying/pointless, someone is going to hear about it. If you don't like pop ups there are a lot of people just like you (most people don't complain they just leave). Your response is, "don't complain, just install an ad blocker." That in my opinion is just wrong and not a justified thing to do to iboats. If you are unhappy with something, it is not only your right to say something, it's your duty to support the site that has brought all of us so much.

Re: Bottom Pop-ups - What's Up?

I can see some of your points. We all have our priorities, and decide how much time and energy to spend on any particular issue. Hence my choice to just use pop-up blockers or IE. Glad you have the knowledge about this issue, which I certainly didn't have before reading your post above, thanks for sharing it.

I use an ad blocker, I don't like seeing the ads, if I didn't have the ad blocker I'd feel the same as many of you do. You are right, telling everyone to get an ad blocker really defeats the purpose of having ads. Fact is we get enough traffic that it really doesn't matter if the 27 people who read this thread get an ad blocker. We would rather have them blocking the ads, than have them leave and post somewhere else. Bottom line, ads aren't going anywhere. We need the money generated from them to power our servers and everything else behind the forums. If you can recommend an alternative way to get this funding, please share.

I can easily add a cookie to only display the popup once a day. This goes against the terms of service, so I would be breaking the agreement if I did that. We've requested the pop up only display once per session, instead of on every page load.

GA_Boater, I will mention the inconsistencies to our ad guy and see if he can do anything about the ad structure.

Re: Bottom Pop-ups - What's Up?

toneeees - I am with you all the way and understand the process and predicament. It's a strange world we live in today with internet, ads, and all the others things it brings. Everyone is still trying to figure out how to make money with this WWW machine.

Ads generate income...I know they do and I have them on my site as well and I make money from them. I, like all the others here, want iboats to succeed. We are ALL on the same side. Personally, I click most ads, although not buying, simply to give count to the site however the repeated pop up get ignored which defeat its purpose.

"We've requested the pop up only display once per session, instead of on every page load."

Thank you for this and thanks for listening to us.

Toneeees - I understand you have contracts to stick to and pay for this great resource. Otherwise I would be paying real $$$ for an ad free site. Thanks for looking into the inconsistencies.

And I understand about ad blockers too. And I choose not to use one. Here's why - In todays Internet environment too many thieves abound and I figure that every ad-on I use is another possible path into my personal data. Yeah, kinda paranoid but I got trashed once because my wife loaded something without thinking of the consequences. So I'm not installing an ad blocker to soothe my iboats surfing when it's the only site I have trouble with. Semi rant over.

BTW - I've updated FF to version 20 and so far this morning no Husky, Texas or wiggly toe ads. Thanks for looking into this guys. :)

Chances are with ad block from your browser you should be fine.
