Friend has a 19' with outboard and it has been painted with reg. boat paint. It has blisters into the hull not deep though. He is sanding them out (50-100 of them) and repairing them with epoxy and is removing all the bottom paint. The resulting surface will be a combination of old gelcoat(30 yrs old) and the epoxy patches. We are curious what he should use to reseal the exterior of the hull.(Water line and below) I have rebuilt several boats and always just regelcoated. He doesnt have the skill to do that. I mentioned two part epoxy or two part urethane. Any suggestions?

Re: bottom repair

sorry, forgot to add that the boat is trailered and is stored out of the water. He also would like it red if possible.

Bisters are caused by moisture that builds up in voids in the laminate. There is not many options, all you can do is grind and feather away the blister. Then fill with an epoxy filler, fair and barrier coat

There are epoxy primers made exactly for that porpose. I tried it once on an old boat I had, applied 6 layers, and had the boat for years after, it never came back. International has one.

Once sealed with epoxy, what would be a good finish paint? urethane? epoxy? one part? two part? need advise. Its not a high dollar boat but dont want to have to do it again.

tootoot, After painting with the epoxy barrier coat, you should use a two-part polyurethane, which is made for below waterline. If he is only going to trailer the boat, he could get away with a one-part polyurethane paint. You can roll and tip or spray these.
