Re: Bought a fixer upper *pictures added*

on cars i usually use it, so dont see why not on here. off to get parts, i found the carb numbers and maybe they will have a rebuild kit.

i haven't rebuilt a carb in years... actually i was probably 12 and working on a lawnmower LOL

Re: Bought a fixer upper *pictures added*

alright, i feel i got a little accomplished

changed plugs
added seafoam
changed fuel filter
i did not take the carb apart, i did spray some in the butterfly
and there is a hose running to the side that i took off and sprayed some inside the carb.

seems to idle a little better but i now believe the problem is elsewhere...
at the motor end of the control cables there is the selector? shift linkage? dont know what it is called. i put it in drive and its putt putt... i push the selector just a little bit and away we go.

here is a video i just retook with start up (held the key a little long... not used to holding a camera) you can hear it idle a little better and then hear when i kick it into gear, and see what and when i tap it and then vroom...

i dont know if there is any tightening it so i dont have to tap it or if the new cable will work... it is rigged and may not be working 100%

I am thinking once i get the selector so i dont have to bump it and get the idle set it should be good to go.

Hey!.... that's certainly progress- gotta feel good. I wish I could help with what makes it bog down and requires "jiggling." Did you grease your jiggle bearings? That could be it. Also, I don't know what redline is on that, but see if you can find out, as it sounded to me like you were turning it pretty fast. I think I saw you take it to approx. 5500- maybe that's okay??? Good work so far!!

haven't tried any higher than that... actually had it up to the 5500 on the water. I haven't wanted to push it any higher to find the redline or rev limiter.

maybe after the blower gets here and i get it shifting smoother i may wrap it up that high.

I don't know that it would have a rev limiter..... maybe, but I'm thinking not. I guess the lifters could "float" and then it would sound different. Did you run it to 5500 in gear on the water? I would think if a 2.3 is turning that fast in gear on the water, you either have spun your prop, or need a prop that will keep you in a lower rpm range if you're wanting to go fast. Hopefully someone will chime in and say what the max rpm range is on a 2.3.... hint, hint, hint... anyone? Okay, Jason.... I'll try to leave you alone, now. I think this will be a very satisfying project for you!

Re: Bought a fixer upper *pictures added*

did some searching and came up with this... one guy says he was recommended 4600

another guy says 5400 because these are high rpm motors. i was running it at 5300 or 5400 on the water... it had a little bit more throttle i put it up to just about 6 for a few seconds and you could feel it kick out more deffinately.

so if someone knows for sure let me know becasue i have no idea.

please REPLACE the cap, rotor, and plug wires, that is unless you know that they have been recently replaced. plug wires can look good, but have internal resistance issues and you wont have a good spark. also i would check craigslist for upholstry repair. lots of ammature upholsterers advertise there. you can get great deals that way (just be sure too look at their work before you commit to $$$$) anyways looks like you will have yourself a nice boat when finished......nate

I would at least check the points (if any) and connect a vacuum guage to it. The vacuum guage will help you verify the timing is set. Actually, the vacuum guage will just about tell you anything you want to know.

The carb actually sounds fine. You may want to adjust the idle screw a little, but other than that it sounds way way better. Try not to rev it out of water, though, as you can callapse the hose from the water pump suction and ruin the impeller.

If you want to disassemble the carb and clean it out, you can replace the main gasket with self-cut cork from autozone. It comes in a roll and you just cut what you need. I used it on mine and it works well.

cap and rotor are very clean and the plug wires dont look bad. I will check the points and hook a vacuum gauge to it.

I think i read somewhere that you have to adjust the idle in the water and not on the muffs?

Re: Bought a fixer upper *pictures added*

Will a vacuum gauge tell the future? ;) Oh.... if only! Some good suggestions. Yes those items should be replaced at some point for optimal gain- I was suggesting the "give it a good cleaning" approach to save a little on the initial nickel-n-diming, while he works out some bugs and finds a direction. It does appear that it runs well enough for now so ya'll can help him figger out how to mess with the shift cable. I would think a new cable(s) would def. be in order- probably be easier to adjust than an oar handle :).

Setting the idle in water just allows you to set the proper "in gear" idle with the resistance of the water on the prop.
