I bought a MFG Westfield custom with a sold trailer and a 85 HP Johnson superquiet which was made in 1968 the moter that is. I paid $350 for the boat. I think I am looking to get a smaller moter for it. Could anyone tell me how much they think I should post the Johnson for?

Need more information. What is the running condition of the Johnson? I will tell you that that era of Johnson/Evinrudes are not very desireable due to their electric shift lower units which have numerous no longer available parts. However, if the motor runs and shifts, and can be demonstrated, and looks fairly decent, I'd ask $500 and see what you can get.

Up in this end of the earth , it seems to be an average of $10 a Hp - for good looking / running motor . Why not put an ad for a swap ?? May save time to get the size / year motor you want from someone who wants a bigger motor ... Ie ask for a good running 50spl + electric troller for your 85 hp .........:) Welcome too ! peter

Gotta ask, why a smaller motor?

I can only make guesses , but probably to save fuel and / or cut down weight . Without a lot of fact checking ( I'm being honest) the '68 85hp is a big 4cyl / with pindrive prop . Dropping to a newer 50spl 2cyl , would net arround 60hp ; cut arround 100lbs and give the options of many through hub props . In another thread I read a dad wanted to "limit" the top speed of a boat his kid uses (for safety reasons) 'cause the boat he bought was too fast. peter
