Hi All,
Got an OMC Sterndrive (model # 980701 Serial# W119277) it has a faceplate that says " 170 hp ", to go on my 1977 Seaswirl ( cabin cuddy 3800lb 19' with a 1977 Mercruiser 2.5l, 120hp motor, 4000 to 4400 RPM.
The said sterndrive takes an OMC Stringer Stern Drive Electric Shift Pin Drive Prop.
My three questions are 1. Will all OMC pinned drive props fit the shaft? 2. Knowing my clearance is 14.5", I am thinking a 14" prop, I am just not sure of the pitch? 3. How important is it to have the cone (I don't have) on the end of the shaft?

Thanks in advance

Welcome aboard.

A little confused. Are you replacing a Mercruiser outdrive with a Stringer outdrive?

It sounds like he is taking a Mercruiser out and replacing it with an old Stringer. An OMC Cobra or Volvo SX would be a lot easier

I'm a little confused too ...

980701 should be a '76 120 (electric shift 4 cylinder). The 170HP model was only made one year ('74), but it was a V8. The drive ratios will be pretty different I would think.

And GA's right, a Stringer sure won't marry up to a Mercruiser.

Otherwise, if it's a Stringer the 14/14 prop jimmbo pointed you too is a good start.

If that is what he's doing ... STOP!

You can't come back from that change!

You can, but it requires replacement of the entire transom to do it right

When I bought the boat it had no outboard drive unit, just motor "120hp" and the intermediate housing. I picked up the sterndrive "stringer" (model # 980701 Serial# W119277) and it matched perfectly. We'll see what happens when my 14" X 14 prop arrives;).
Paid 200.00 for boat and trailer. Traded seats in the boat for sterndrive which works great. The motor has a newer closed cooling system and looks recently rebuilt. 120 psi at all four cylinders. If it won't run out, I'll part it out :D. I was amazed how smooth those electric springs shift and they worked! I have never owned an old stringer...hope it don't break for parts are really limited and pricey.

Sounds like your whole system is OMC, no Mercruiser involved.

I like the electric shift - for as finicky as it is, there are some really nice features of that kind of system. And they are soooo nice and quiet.

Just be aware that nearly ANY stringer out drive will mate up just fine with nearly ANY stringer intermediate. But that doesn't mean that the gear ratios are a match for your system. You have to know that the gear ratio of the outdrive is the right one for your engine, otherwise you're not going to get the right performance out of it.

Unfortunately, I cannot find any info on the stringer outdrive. (model # 980701 Serial# W119277) So, it will be interesting when I go run it at the lake.
