I like a nice old fashioned occasionally when we go out for a nice dinner. I thought I might like to make my own at home once in a while. Besides a bottle of premixed for Christmas guest last year I have not bought a bottle of bourbon for over 20 years. Went to the liquor store today. I was surprised at how many different choices are out there now. One whole isle in the liquor store top to bottom 30 yards long, nothing but bourbon. Reminds me of the craft beer craze. (((And some of the prices)))
I ended up with Knob creek 9 year old stuff.

Although bourbon sales are way down this year, "fancy" bourbons have been popping up more and more in the prev. few years.

Last I heard Jack Daniels was suspending production for 1 year and trying to sell its current stock.

Knob creek will make a nice old fashion. Don't forget the Angostura orange bitters
Yes,,I’ve had an old fashioned made with knob creek. Was very good. Reason I picked it up and as a bonus it was on special.
Our local Wally World has those bitters , next on the list😎

One of the bottles label I saw caught my eye. Was called “Howler Head” I believe. Picture of a rabid monkey on it.

I dont buy a lot of spirits ....gin for Mum and a single malt for Dad, so I tend to go for something special , last time I got locally made Stewart Island gin for Mum and again locally made single malt made in Wanaka ....where they live so the big brand names get passed over.

I’m not a big drinker but I do enjoy the Jack Honey. And I have yet to have a Japanese whiskey that’s wasn’t very tasty.

If you use simple syrup in your OF recipe for sweetener, try using pure maple syrup in its place. I like my OF with the maple syrup much better. I smoke mine with a cocktail smoker and also use Angostura orange bitters.

One of my favorite recipes is on the Woodford Reserve website. S'mores Old Fashioned. A bit of work, but totally worth it. Follow their recipe to the letter. It does not disappoint.

Since the state drink of Cheeseheads is the Old Fashioned......
and since I had to learn at an early age to make it for the family.....
the family recipe....

2-3 fingers of your favorite bourbon or whiskey (or even brandy if your into the sweet) in a highball glass
orange slice
4 shakes of bitters (remember, the bitters capital of the world is Washington Island Wisconsin)
splash of cherry juice (no bar syrup)
muddle

one large ice cube

if going sweet - used to be Jolly Good lemon lime (remember the Wisconsin theme) or any good lemon/lime mixer
if going sour - Squirt (no longer available - so now jolly good sour-pow'r or fresca) or any good grapefruit/lemon mixer

no sour mix (because thats just nasty)

Garnish with what you like. I'm partial to pickled brussel sprouts in a sour. a cherry if you like the sweet

I hear that international demand for Bourbon is way down for some reason ??
Read an article the other day that said the drop is due to the younger generations moving away from alcohol (health reasons) and the proliferation of THC based drinks.

THC drinks are new to me....had to google them
