My bow eye started to pull through the other day. It was through the hull to a 6 inch piece of a 2x4 cut on the sides to fit into the hull. That wood block was then glassed in. I have gained access and removed the wood block. I was going to use an oak board to replace the backing block. Should I glass the block to the hull then glass over it (put a few layers of csm down the the block) Or should I just glass over it like what was there before? Is oak good to use? Someone thought the original was cedar but I'm not sure. The boat has a balsa core but there is no coring at the bow eye

White oak, not red oak

Exterior plywood would work too.

I'd wrap the block w CSM, embed it in PB and once cured use 1708 to tab it to the hull and add a few layers of 1708 over it, done all at once in 1 layup.

I dont normally recommend the cloth, mat and polyester resin you can find at a big box store, but for a small job like a bow eye backer, use the CSM (mat) and cloth (instead of 1708) you can get in a small package.

Big box store poly resin has wax in it, so once it cures, the surface has to be well prepped to remove the wax blush.

If you arent concerned w gelcoating over the repair, epoxy could be used too. Poly or epoxy repairs can both be painted.

Thanks, got it laid up. I used the chopped strand and the woven cloth over a block of acx cut to fit the hull and embedded with pb. I'll probably sand it and throw a few more layers on before I drill the bolt holes and bolt it up. I have some 5200 in my freezer that was opened around Memorial Day. The tube hasn't cured is that ok to use to seal the bolt shanks or should I get some new stuff?

As long as the 5200 is still in liquid form coming out of the tube it should be fine I would think ... Did it freeze solid in the freezer ?

Your 5200 will be fine assuming you can get it out the nozzle
