Bow Thrust

The Sacramento Delta wind really blows hard in the afternoon which makes it very difficult to berth the Toon in her slip so I'm thinking about a bow thrust on my 28’ Party Hut. I ran across this that appears will do the job with a forward and reverse thrust. Should be an easy mod to fabricate a telescopic shaft to raise and lower accordingly.

Sounds like a reasonable idea to add a bow thruster. Not sure if that's enough for that big of a boat.

The mounting and steering system for the thruster will be an interesting project.

If you see the need regularly, sounds like a trolling motor mounted in front might work just as well, without the need to be real creative when it comes to mounting and controlling it. Why reinvent the wheel?

Problem with that is that my Toon weighs too much for a regular trolling motor and many other issues.

dang, that is more expensive than the side shift bow thrusters from vetus https://sideshift.com/

Am I missing something here? The Minn Kota is priced at $1100 and the side shift bow is almost $4K  .

I think a good 24 volt trolling motor with a co pilot would work great for what your wanting to do. And with the copilot you can control it from anywhere on the boat via hey fob .

Seon,
Help me visualize the problem a little better. I assume it is a crosswind situation, perhaps in an area with little room to maneuver. Is the wind blowing the bow, the stern or the whole boat sideways? Describe a typical docking problem due to winds.

P.S. if you give the name of the marina, we can look at it on Google Earth and see the situation even better.

It'd be nice to just put a trolling motor on but no room on the bow plus this Party Hut is very heavy that needs at lease 100# thrust.

All the above, LOL.
I'm at Oxbow Marina in Isleton, CA
at the very end of C-dock.

Typical wind speed in the afternoon is in the 15 to 20+ mph and as you can see, the Toon is like a sail boat.
Another problem I have is that the binnacle is has two lever, shift and throttle that I'm not used to but will be changed to a single lever soon when I swap out the Merc 115 hp 2 stroke to a Yamaha F115.

They make them 100# you can also get I pilot and program it. It all depends on how much money you want to throw at it. This poor boy would be letting someone off on the dock and handing them a rope hooked to the front so they could help guide the front while I used the motor to guide the rear

80 pound Minnkota AP with co pilot on a quick mount, half the cost and ready to go. I would then learn to come back to the dock on the Minnkota only and use it to dock, You could actually leave it in the vertical position pulled up to the stop, outside the gate and it would never be in your way. You would just drop it down in the water when you want to use it.

In theory the iPilot version of that motor has GPS and could learn a route to dock the boat and do it for you. I have the motor I described above with the factory iPilot option and I would not trust it to do the job automatically on the iPilot, but I'm sure it would work to get the boat into a slip running it manually.

I am thinking about going back to fishing from the pontoon and will move the Minnkota to that boat. I'm completely confident that the 80 pounder will provide plenty of power to move my 20 footer around. I have had 55 pound Autopilot motors on 20 foot pontoons before and they have enough power to push a smaller pontoon around.

Even if you must have 100 pounds of power I would still go with a trolling motor, with remote control on a quick mount bracket at the front gate. It gives you what you need out of the box without having to figure out how to mount and control the drive mounted motor.

I looked at the marina photos and can see how tight it must be to turn in. I'm not sure any of the devices mentioned are strong enough to hold your boat against a strong crosswind, but one on the front might allow you to turn more sharply without the forward speed needed to maneuver with the engine. If that's all you're looking for, I think your idea is sound. I don't know enough about specific electric motors to recommend one over another. I'd go for the one that was both easy to deploy/retract as you approach/leave the marina, and easy to control while maneuvering.

Well my project has begun. Bought a 70# trolling motor, removed the motor and fabricated an aluminum bracket to mount the motor on.
I'm still gathering parts for it but hope to have it installed and operational in a few weeks, after I bring the Toon home.
Will post pics when installed and operational.
