I have a 87 60hp evinrude and I took the boat out and could get it to plane but every now and then it would speed up but then slow back down. So took the carbs out and discovered that the first bowl didn't have a bowl jet. ok so two questions what will that jet missing cause the carb to do and second what type of jet so I can buy a new one is it? thanks.20130611_155818.jpg

That's the Hi-Speed jet, or what OMC inelegantly calls the "orifice plug". Looks like your 60hp should take the "54D" jet.

Check it out here, be sure to verify your model # for correct selection of the part:

1987 Johnson Evinrude 60 hp Outboard Parts by Model Number

With the jet missing, that particular carb would suck fuel like crazy. Probably wouldn't run so well either!

I'd expect that with the proper jet installed, it'll run just a wee bit better and you may not have any issues at all.

At least the carb will be more likely to have the proper amount of fuel flowing thru it, and it'll sure make it easier to troubleshoot any other problems.

HTH, let us know how it runs............ed
