Boxer/Mastiff Dog Information?

Since this is a pretty diverse group I thought I would just ask if any of you know anything about Mastiff dogs.

I?m thinking about adopting a boxer/mastiff mix. He is 90-100 lbs.

I had great luck with the underground fence for about 15 years with my last dog. He was a boxer/GSD mix and after a tough training period he never left the yard unless it was in my truck but he was gentle and wouldn?t have hurt anyone if he did get out.

Any opinions or information is appreciated.

My opinion is that the temperament of a dog is largely influenced by how they are raised as a pup. Breeds have different attributes, but personality comes from the masters and environment.

I disagree with the post above about temperment of a dog. While it is true that how a dog is cared for will effect it's temperment, Different breeds definitely have different baseline behaviors/quirks.

Boxers are awesome dogs, but I have never known a Mastiff.

My last dog was indoor/outdoor and that worked so well I will probably try it again. He had a separation problem and would wait for me in the yard but the few times I tried to leave him in the house went about as bad as it can get.

He had been abused and I was afraid of him for about the first month. After that it was hard to believe I was ever afraid of him so I also believe that a lot of their temperament is created by the owner.

On the other hand I have been around dogs my entire life and there are a couple of breeds that I have never completely trusted.

Another consideration is Mastiffs tend to be shy dogs to the point when pushed they can suddenly turn very agressive (attack and bite) as an act of defence.

That is the kind of thing that might be a show stopper but if that is a Mastiff trait then it may be in there just waiting for a reason to happen.

Pascal, thanks for the link. I will follow up on it. I would really like to have this dog but I don?t want to get anyone hurt.

My brother is on his 3rd Mastiff. Gentile temperament is an understatement. He describes them as "furniture" when they start to age. Only draw back is their short life span. His first 2 lasted less than 9 years each. His current male tips the scales at just over 200 pounds, at a year and a half old.

I spent a couple of evenings hanging out in a Mastiff forum but as you might guess everyone on a Mastiff forum likes Mastiffs.

The general description I found on google is that they are big lugs that can be protective. Most said that they were more likely to knock an intruder down and sit on him than bit him.

I even found a site that claims that Boxer/Mastiff mix produces the best dog in the world.

That got me thinking that I needed to find some just everyday people with Mastiff experience.

That caused me to decide that if I wanted to know about dogs, I should ask boat people.

Strange how the mind works.

Mastiff advice.....

They drool ALLOT ....... you will find that you will be wiping up drool and leaving small wash cloths around.

Beautiful dogs. I have seen both sides of the breed from the timid to the fierce. They can be very protective (and very effective) of you.

I've had 3 boxers over the past 20 years. Great dogs. I work with 3 guys with a total of 4 Mastiff's, plus the OL's sister has one. They seem to be really good, gently dogs. I would imagine that a mix of the two would be a very gentle, yet protective companion.

Thanks for all the replies. I really didn?t know that about the gas but I had heard about the drooling. This guy has cheeks that don?t hang much below his lower jaw so I?m hoping he doesn?t hold a quart on each side. My last dog lost all control and I cleaned up after him for a year so how bad could it be. ( I may take that back )

By the time I get done spoiling him if he is mean then he just has a bad streak. My dogs all live a pretty good life.

When I was really young my family had a Boxer named Ike after Pres Eisenhower. He never hurt anyone and I sure that we gave him reason.

Ok, he hurt me once. I was riding him and he ran me into a door facing. That should have been reason enough to bite me.
