Does anyone have any experience with boyesen power reeds? If so do they work, and how much do they cost (I live in mass and no one sells them here)? I have a v4 135hp evinrude. Their web site says I need part # 144……..

Re: boyesen power reeds?

Yeah, I have a set in my 300 hp mercury and they do give a little better performance. The only drawback is that they are made of fiberglass(or something like it)and after a couple hundred hours, they dry up and distort. I just went back to the mercury stainless steel petals because they last so much longer. It is a bitc* to pull those reed blocks for a quick reed change. And for me, I have 24 rows of those babies in my motor. If your racing, you may be in and out of that motor through the season, so labor is not so critical. As for price, they were about 10% less for me. Good luck

144 is the correct number. I have had the reeds last for years (over 1000 hours) with no problem. You will see some slight improvement in acceleration but dont expect a jump in top RPM unless you are turning 6300 to 6500 now. Then you might get another 300 to 400.

The thing that kills the fiber reeds is when the motor spits or sneezes at idle. That burns the tip of the reed.

Good luck!
