Re: Brain Teaser - try solving it.

It's ever so slightly smaller along the top edge and that's enough to fill the gap. Notice how a couple of blocks over from the tip, the space left on top of the colored triangle is smaller on the bottom example? Also, at the top right of the triangle, see the space left over in the bottom picture is smaller. It's like that on the whole side. All added up, it accounts for a whole block.

Re: Brain Teaser - try solving it.

C/P:

The 'paradox' occurs because the overall figure is not really a triangle. The 'hypotenuse' of the big 'triangle' is not a straight line, it consists of two line segments with slightly different angels to horizontal. This means that in the top figure the 'hypotenuse' is slightly bent in, and in the bottom it's slightly bent out. This results in af difference of areas of excactly 1 unit.

Calculation of areas of individual pieces:
red triangle: 0.5*8*3 = 12
dark green triangle: 0.5*2*5 = 5
light green figure: 8 (by counting)
orange figure: 7 (by counting)
total: 32
-> the real size of the four pieces together

Total area of big 'triangle' as seen in top picture: 0.5*13*5 = 32.5
-> looks bigger than it is

Total area of big figure as seen in bottom picture: 0.5*13*5 - 1 = 31.5
-> looks smaller than it is

Amazing how easy it is to play tricks on the eyes

Re: Brain Teaser - try solving it.

bh357 is refering to the green triangle, 2 by 5 squares, slope of .4 (2/5), and the red triangle which is 3 by 8, slope of .375 (3/8).

Meaning that the long diagonal line is not straight. Guess your brain straightens it out for you.

Good catch bh357.

[edit - Xcuse me got his in first, but mine is simpler :p :p ]
[edit again - ya I know, Dave beat us both, but ours are more scientific ;) ]

Xcusme,

I actually "saw" that and discounted it as the statement says that the "partitions" are the same size. After reading your explanation I realized that they are the same size, but that statement is there to throw you off. You're 'da man!!!

Re: Brain Teaser - try solving it.

HA! I'm NOT taking credit for that one, it was a copy/paste from another site!

BUT, in the same site (and post) a fella posed this....what a hoot!!

There were three native american squaws. One slept on a deer skin. One slept on an elk skin and the third slept on a hippopotamus skin. All three became pregnant. The first two each had a boy, and the one who slept on the hippopotamus skin had twin boys. This goes to prove that the squaw of the hippopotamus is equal to the sons of the squaws of the other two hides.

This is proof positive that Pythagoras was an indian......and he had 3 wives....and obviously , a lot of time on his hands.....

You can theorize and explain all you want, but the fact of the matter is the parts only fit together one way to make a solid figure.

:D
