'87 Dakota, rear wheel cylinder was leaking.
Put kit in and new shoes on, (I hate shoes), and bled the rear brakes.

Hold brake down and it will slowly bleed off.(Brake pedal to floor)
Will I have to bleed the fronts also?

Re: Brake question

Probably yes. I've changed brakes & have had to bleed the whole system to get all of the air out.

SBN,

Hate to say this but, I'll bet you're still leaking past a seal or two. Or....

Any reason you didn't put in a reman. cylinder?

Also, I've had the SLIGHTEST" bleeder screw or line connection leak cause a fading pedal. Those can be VERY hard to see. Sometimes you can hear them.

Good luck. I feel your aggrevation.

DJ, after I put kit in and bled it, I pull the hub back off and looked and did not see any seepage anywhere.
Also, I could not get the brake line loose to replace the whole cylinder is why I did not.
It was getting dark on me and I did not feel much like cutting and replacing lines tonight.

No lines were leaking that I could see and I checked them from fron to back.

Also double checked the bleeder screws after using them to make sure none was leaking.

This has been doing this a while and I just figure it's got air in the whole system now.

Re: Brake question

How low was the resevoir before you rebuilt the cylinder? Air shouldn't have gotten back up into the whole system by disconnecting one wheel cylinder. Although unrelated, your mastercylinder could be leaking internally.

Re: Brake question

Yea boomyal, I thought of that also.
Wife drives this one and she said she kept having to put fluid in it ever day so I don't know if the master cylinder got empty or not.

Re: Brake question

SBN,

If the fluid is being lost, it's going somwhere.

A couple things to think about. I know it's late there.

1. Is the power (vacuum) booster new/old?

2. Master cylinder-new/old?

Since you do not SEE any leaks it doesn't mean they are not there.

The booster can leak and cause a fading pedal. Also, the master cylinder can leak and the fluid goes into the booster-to be burned in the engine. A "no-see-um" scenario.

Re: Brake question

I know this isnt exactly what you want to hear, but when one brake part fails in an older vehicle, You can bet that most all of the system is in the same shape. Im guilty of doing what you are, but you might as well do a complete brake job and be done with it. Change those old rubber lines also. Unfortunatly as much as we rely on them, brakes are very much overlooked. Think about it, when was the last time you changed the brake fluid?? It actually should be done every couple years. If you have anti lock brakes, you should change it every year. Ya right, how often does that happen??

Re: Brake question

I could not agree more with LubeDude.

The braking system is the most overlooked part of any vehicle. People will shop at bargain basement outlets to get the CHEAPEST brake price out there. Yet, they'll pour Mobil 1 into their engine at $3.00/quart.

I prefer to KNOW that I am going to stop.

Re: Brake question

Well, I bled the whole system and got it going.
I guess it had sucked an air bubble back into the master cylinder and into the front system.

Thanks for all the replys guys.
