Brakes reccomendation

I need to install brakes on my single axle trailer. I replaced the axle and removed the old rusted out brake plates-it used to have drum brakes. There is no longer a brake line and currently the drums are not on the trailer either-oh and I'm told that I should also replace the master cylinder that is in the trailer tongue. When I ordered the new axle from Karavan it came with hubs and whatnot, but it did not utilize the drums. I was wondering what you guys would reccomend to do from here. I apologize I do not have any pictures. I do know that there is a square plate medial to the spindle where a brake plate could be bolted on to.

My boat is a 2006 Bayliner 195 BR and it weighs somewhere around 2,600 lbs. I do not know much about all this so I hope you can help point me in the right direction.

Thanks guys!

Re: Brakes reccomendation

Good afternoon Pat -

Those plates you have on your axle are called flanges .

If you are seeking to put brakes back on to the trailer and hub drums I would suggest calling a website called Trailerpartsusa.com

I am guessing you are seeking 7" hub drums with backing plates . They sell them and are very inexpensive .

I will check out that website today.
How do I know what size I need? I know I have 6 lug wheels-being at work I can't run out to see what size the tire is... :(

Re: Brakes reccomendation

Are you saying your trailer rims are 6 lug ? If they are , what is the hole centers ? My guess would be 6 bolt on 5 1/2 bolt circle . Usually that means you have a axle that is a 6K axle . Check out the diameter of your axle , does it measure 3 inches ? Hopefully, its a round tube axle . If not ,there are other ways of measuring , Does your axle have a I.D tag that is tack welded on the passenger side ? Do you have any bearing numbers ? I could do a little bit of research to find out what spindle you have . Check that out and let me know .

Yes, the rims are 6 lug. My axle is not round, it is rectangular. I have a attached a few pics that maybe help. One is the label from the trailer which some specs on it. One has the old axle before I took it off, and one is of the new axle before I put it on (Sorry it has shrink wrap over the hub). I just happened to have these on my phone.View attachment 111385View attachment 111386View attachment 111387

Hello Pat -

Your attachement does not allow me to open it .

Let me know what you come up with for a spindle size or inner and out bearing size .

I am assuming you have tapered spindles .

If they are 1" straight spindles you have a 2K axle hands down .

Let me know what the bearings are and I can get you that info in a heart beat .

I'm curious pat. I don't see brakes as necessary on a 2700 pound rig. If you're installing them for your own peace of mind I certainly understand, but if I were comfy with my tow vehicle I probably wouldn't take on the additional maintenance burden. Just a thought. Good luck with your project.:)

^ Depends what you're pulling it with. Full size pickup or SUV? Sure, skip the brakes. "Crossover" SUV or minivan? Brakes are a good idea.

We tow with a Nissan Xterra. It has been fine so far, but legally I am over the weight limit of 3,000lbs to tow without brakes.

Absolutely. Hence my comment regarding being comfy with his tow vehicle.

Hello Pat -

Just by looking at the flange it appears that you have 6- 7k axle on the "old picture". I can see the bolting pattern on the flange . I am betting that the former hub drums you had is 12 X 2 1/4 ? 6 bolt on 5 1/2 bolt center . What I cannot determine is , the new axle you have a picture of . Take a picture of the new spindle .

Re: Brakes reccomendation

The new axle is the exact same axle as the old one. The new one just did not come with drums it came with standard hubs and so I just used what it came with.
Would you recommend me sticking with drumb brakes or switch over to something else?

Re: Brakes reccomendation

Personally , I would do the hub drums and brakes .

Why bother burning out your own brakes on the Xterrra ? Its your call.

Fresh or Salt water. If salt then you are probably better of with disk type surge brakes. For fresh water I would put a set of electric drum brakes on and be done. I much prefer electric over surge brakes. The cats meow would be electric over hydraulic disks but that is a little pricey. Either way, the hubs that came with the new axle come off and get replaced by the brake drum or the brake rotor.
