I have a never been started 1988 6hp merc that I was thinking of using on a small aluminum boat. This motor was purchased as a gift in 1988 and never used. It spent most of its life in a basement and the last 10 years in a garage....it really has never seen light.

I have been around boats and motors my whole life - all OMC and Yamaha. Question is....besides changing the lower unit fluid and checking for any obvious rot (which there appears to be none) what else should I do before I hook a gas line up to it? I imagine if there were some dry rot gas lines or carb, it would be fairly easy to spot. Am i missing something? can i just use normal break in procedures for 10 hours?

Thanks

Change the impeller. It will have taken a set at best, at worst it will have dried up and cracked. 25:1 fuel mix for the first tank of fuel with no prolonged WOT.
