I got a new boat for Christmas. It is an Xpress XP16SC and has a 50hp Yamaha. Yesterday I took it out for its inaugural trip on the Neches River in Southeast Texas. The river is low right now and my trip was a total 1000% disaster. I am so bummed and down on this boat. It drug bottom the entire time while I watched Jon boats big and small rip and roar all around me. I was told that this boat would run shallow. Anything but I guess! Any suggestions? I contacted a War Eagle dealer for a possible trade and was told that before I trade it I should look into changing the prop. My prop has a 13 pitch and he recommended going to a 17 pitch. Would this help? The boat would never plane out letting me get on top. Also keep in mind that in the rivers you can't always run fast either.

I don't know how to tell my dad but I'm so bummed with this boat.

I run all over the Neches River, with an I/O, you must be going in some of the small cuts, like Bessy-heights, the boat is not your problem, knowing where to go is.

You diffenity don't need a bigger pitch if you can't get on plane.
Is there a lake to see if it will get on plane?
Do you know what your rpms were?
Is it a brand new motor as well?
I'm thinking you can swing a bigger prop but lets see if the motor is working correctly first.
That boat should fly right along, console model?
Don't get discouraged so fast, should be a good river boat.

Were the other boats in the channel ?...you say it was dragging bottom...it is also likely that you need to trim the engine up a bit...

So its is something like this? Looks like a duck boat that wouldn't have much of a draft, what exactly was dragging, the motor?

You should take the boat where you can run it and find how quick it will plane.
A jon boat will generally get on the water quick. What is your boat like?
Does it resemble a Jon is it a flat V or Deep V.A deep V would run all the way to the stern about 18-20 degrees. Are they running jets on the jons?
What does the boat weigh?dry(just the boat.Did you beatup you're prop?

Sounds like you need a rubber raft and a paddle!

Seriously though, jet engines were made for skinny water river fishin'... props, not so much.

You're just asking for trouble taking a prop into skinny river water.

Re: Brand New Boat and NOT HAPPY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Im no expert but I believe a boat that draws inches of water at rest, can dive much deeper at the stern getting on plane w a heavy stern or load. If you never got off the bottom you would not reach full speed/planning!not to mention trolling for broken stuff:eek:Low pitch props amplify the effect as do hammered strong engines.I remember my brother had a 16' Glastron, Carlson? w a Ford302 in/out volvo.it would touch the bottom in 5+' of water when he really goosed it,the bow would block the sun!!If you did not pop up on skis or a wakeboard it would rip your arms off!!!It was a fun boat, cramped inside, but it was scary fast and responsive. If your boat wont get on plane in deeper water somethings wrong or your underpowered. Are you sure the other boats arent running outboards w Jet drive lower units and or tunnel hulls? But Im no expert

That is the boat. I'm embarrassed to say this, but it was total operator error. All of my life I've been used to a little Jon Boat with a 15hp Motor. My new boat has a 50hp Yamaha . This boat being new to me I didn't understand when to tilt and trim it as my old boat didn't have that feature nor did it need it. I took it out again yesterday with a friend of mine and he showed me. I had been trying to trim it up too quickly. After a 2 minute lesson I have now got it. The boat runs like a pro.

I still gotta reply to this....

The dealer that told you "If it doesnt plane out with a 13P, go to a 17P".....NEVER go to this dude for ANYTHING...

It is running fine. But... I do know where to go and those small cuts is where I want to be. This boat will have to be able to get into those cuts. I have to be able to get into the backwaters. We'll see.

In that boat you should be able to run Bessie Heights (well not right now - we need rain) no problem. There are options to help if you are just not able to get where you need to go. Jackplate, float boxes, whale tale? I plan on at least putting on a jackplate on mine.
