The boat I got from a freind of a friend and he said that everything was great until they put it in the water a few years ago and realized that the engine had froze. They pulled the engine and then it sat waiting for a donor. Then it went to my friend in whom I trust and he had it for a year and now to me. So I'm pretty sure that the drive works fine.
Just so you know, sometimes the drives freeze up and the owner thinks the engine is the thing that seized up and pulls it without testing.

In other words...assume nothing!

Okay. So stern drive simply refers to the fact that it's at the rear of the boat?
So what is the difference between 400 and the 800. Is it just that the 400 is powered by a smaller power plant ?

How can I tell? Do I need to open it up? Or is there another Method?

Its easier with the engine in there, pull the drive and rotate the engine. Harder with just the drive on there. Should be a way to rotate the input shaft to the drive with what you have now. Just have to make sure you rotate it the correct way because of the water pump impeller.

water pump impeller on a stringer wont put up much of a fight. its about 4" in diameter with really long blades.

in neutral, the prop only will spin. in any gear (fwd/reverse) turning the ball gears will get the prop to turn.

with the drive up, using a small pry bar would be enough to turn the drive with the ball gears from underneath.

... post 1 the OP says the boat had a 305 in it. best bet is for the OP to post pics of the parts he has and we see ...
Jeeze ... I'm still a half step behind! I think I looked up the specs on the Hawaiian and that got me thinking 140HP.

Anyway - Scott's gotcha' rolling in the right direction. He knows these things better'n I do anyway. :thumb:

Well, I found this one. I'll go through it when I get it home and make sure that it's in good shape. then I'll buy the goodies that will need go on to create the marine style motor.
Getting closer I suppose.
I guess it's about time to start a build thread
I appreciate all the wisdom my fellow boaters! You all are awesome!

Hoping that is actually a Chevrolet block and not a Buick. I am guessing the bellhousing patern may be the same but not sure about the accessories in the front.

You should be looking for Chevrolet blocks.

it is a chevy block - the dizzy is in the back. that motor would work, however coming out of a car and not a truck, you will need to change the cam to a marine or truck cam.

the automotive accessory drive, starter, exhaust, and carb on the motor can be sold to help cover some expenses

Yeah that's what I was thinking. Chevy and Buick are both GM
I was planning a Marine cam no matter if it was a truck or a car motor either way.

Could also be an Oldsmobile engine because they were also used in Buicks in 1978 and they have the distributor in the back.

I know that there are a ton of differences in the 350 versions between chevy and Buick but I'm not real sure about 305. It seems like if I remember correct that around 74 or so Buick stopped using a 307 and started putting the chevy 305 in some models. I thought it looked right but heck I've been wring more than one time in my life. Lol.
I plan to pull a few known measurements and see if it's right before buying. I love the price and if it won't work I've got a line on a couple others that are already out of the donor. We will see how it plays out this weekend.
Either way I should be in possession of SBC 305. I also found a few 350's but they required a full build to get even close to a decent price on them. I figured, from the reading I've done, that the 305 is plenty for what I'm going to need.

I would rather have a 350 but that 305 is the same just a smaller bore. Ran man of them in boats and trucks. Cost to build is the same as a 350. If you get a deal well its a deal.
