Brand new EZ Loader. Surge brakes are hanging up...

Hello, I have a 2011 EZ Loader for 18-21 ft boats, tandom axle, with surge disk brakes.

Everything is great except the brakes hang up. I have a 99 F-250 Powerstroke with a 6-speed hand shaker. Here's an example. I'm doing 45 MPH down a gentle, but long hill. I'm off the throttle, costing. I have to apply the brakes momentarily. This is enough for the surge brakes to engage slightly. But when I release the brakes, they surge brakes don't release. The actuator is still engaged. So now these brakes are dragging for what could be quite a while. I have to blip the throttle, while going down this hill to get the actuator to release.

There is a section of highway that I'm planning on taking a few times this summer. It's something like 12 miles of 6% grade. I could see myself cruising down this highway, at 65 MPH with my trailer brakes on fire.

Another example, if I could to a stop, I can feel the brakes are engaged. I can actually start to pull away from the light very gently and keep the trailer brakes engaged.

I thought surge brakes should have a spring or something so they release with no pressure.

Just wanted to know what you guys thought before I call EZ Loader.

Thanks,
Steve

There is no spring to push the brakes off on my trailer, only seen a couple old ones that had a feature like that. However if you are able to pull away and keep them enguaged, it sounds like the sliding mechanism needs some grease or it is slightly tweaked and grabbing.

Is your trailer level? If it is lower at the hitch it will make matters worse.

Troubles like this are the reason I ordered electric over hydraulic brakes on my new trailer.
Best money I ever spent.

As mentioned, it sounds like the coupler-actuator mechanism is maybe sticking/binding/to tight to slide as designed.

I would never use electric brakes on a boat trailer. If it's a new trailer take it back to the dealer.Let them worry about it.

my hydrolic breaks will hang just a little bit when i step one the break. it seems like they stay partially engauged until the tow vehicle pulls away from the trailer even a little bit...almost like the master cylinder is pushed in until something something pulls it out. its not frozen or anything though.

i can see how on a long down hill how that could be a problem though...

n3up isn't using electric brakes. You have an electric/hydrulic pump mounted on the trailer that is activated by the brake pedal in the towing vechile.
