Hi guys,

I'm at the end of my shopping between those new boat (2011).I really need help while comparing the FW H190 SS and the Monterey 184FS.

They both have the Volvo GXi/SX 225HP engine, wakeboard tower, extended swim platform, etc. They are the same price.

Right now my conclusion:

Monterey:

Pros: good finition, quality, etc... the swim platform seems wayyyy nicer and seems also lower?

Cons: Seating capacity only 6???

Four Winns:

Pros: Beam of 7'11", more room in general, easier to find a local dealership.

Cons: Cheaper finition, cheaper swim platform, cheaper gauges.

Thx for helping me out with that. I've asked a lot of question on this forum, but I want to put my money at the right place and you guys are the best, and I really appreciate your feedbacks.

I can't be of any help...haven't really checked out the Monterey's, but I did get a four winns h180ss this May and have been absolutely loving it. The wife wanted a big sun pad so we went with this four winns.

Cant help with these exact models, but I just picked up a Monterey 214 FS and absolutely love it. As you said, beautiful swim platform, fit and finish is top notch, and mine came with a 5.0 MPI Mercruiser. Not sure if the one you are looking at has the walk through, but mine has a seat cushion that comes up and allows pass through without stepping on the upholstery. It is a very solid boat on the water. Compared to my Tahoe Q7 and earlier, my Chap 21 ft, this is superior. In the Chap defense though, it was a 1990.

Never had a Four Winns, but from other people, I know they are a good boat. I looked at a couple, but I liked the Monterey the best.

Something to also think about, I recently heard that there is legislation to make everyone on an 18 footer or smaller wear lifejackets whenever on the boat. Not sure if that impacts your decision, just threw it out there.

I did a quick search for the 2011 model of both of these. Instantly I can see where they both cut corners but since they aren't your exact prospect boats they might not be the same. When I bought my Sig boat I looked at all of the above boats and then some. Although they are almost non existant in MN I did check out the Monterey and really thought they were the closest to my sig boat for quality, fit and finish. As for the 1990 Chap mentioned above, that is pretty old school stuff and I think mutually exclusive to any contemporary boat as the Tahoe is to both the FW and Monterey. As for the walk through transom, they are becoming more and more common, have been around for several years but are much more smartly designed on today's boats. All of my comments however only apply to the under 20 foot crowd since the corner cutting is lessened in the larger class of boats.

I looked at and test drove a 05 Chap 204 SSi before I bought this Monterey. Very similar specs to the Monterey I bought. Personally, I liked them about equally. Both were very nice fit and finish. The Chap was the same price as the 08 Monterey I ended up buying. So I gained 3 years newer, and the wife liked the colors better. Win Win. I love Chap, and always have. In fact when I set out, I wouldnt look at anything but Chap, but a dealer showed me some options and got me to thinking. I wouldnt discount the Monterey. I found them to be very similar.

As for the OP. I think it really comes down to what will be best for your application. As with me, I looked at all that was available and picked the most for the money. No, it wasnt the Chap I origionally set out to buy, but it is just as nice. So I guess what I am saying is, go test ride them both. See what you like the best and go for it. At one point, I even started looking at new Bayliner and Tahoe. Glad I found this one for sure.
