Djenan - if you do a search in iboats for this topic you'll find heaps of info - its the subject of great debate. Many say use the absolute best you can buy - many say only use OEM products and many say use anything (cheap?)as long as its TCW-3 (the other two options will also be TCW-3).

My 2 cents on the matter are that if i had a nice sparkling new engine that had been designed with the newest greatest oil in mind, then id go for the best i could afford (cos if i could afford a $15000 engine i could afford a few extra bucks on oil). but!...My engine was built in 1971 and i figure that TCW-3 approved oil should be bounds ahead of what was around 30+ years ago.... so figure i cant go too wrong as long as its tcw3 - maybe im wrong...

Im using shell nautilis oil at the moment -its competitive in price to the cheapest oils here in oz ($22 for 4 ltrs i think???)and hopefully shell know what they are doing.

Anyway - do a search here and see what you find

cheers - troy

It doesn't really matter as long as it's made to the TCW-3 standard (As troy says), but just a suggestion.
I use Castrol Marine 2 stroke that conforms to all the specs, but in addition it's a nice dark green colour...
Ever had that bit of doubt when you say #$%^% Did I mix my oil   or not ?
(A bit like Dirty Harry with the 6 shots or only 5 Do you feel lucky ??? :D )
When you mix it, you will know that the ratio will be right coz you most likely have a handy container with a mark on it !!! right??
But if you grab 2 clean glass jars and put unmixed fuel in one and squirt some from your tank in the other.. You should have 2 distinctive colours. 1 is green and the other is pink.
Yep.. you've certainly mixed something.. which is MUCH MUCH better that nothing

Have a squiz here..
Poor old ZMOZ
:(
http://www.iboats.com/cgi-bin/ubb/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=29;t=009462

Yep - I agree with Unicorn - The nautilis is a dark blue colour and is thats one of the reasons i like it (not that i have a preference for blue, just that its a distinctive colour ;) ) . I just thought i was odd taking comfort in the colour of the oil im using - maybe im not so odd after all. ;)

Another Newbie trick I've found.. A bit unrelated though.
When you change your L/U oil (Easy job) replace your plastic washers with Merc bright "BLUE" ones..
(Should make Troy happy :D :D :D )
The reason for this, is that you can see the bugga's in there when checking for water in oil. The black or clear ones are impossible to see in the recess and if one falls out and rolls away, you have no seal.

Good comment. Just a thought, our mechanic mentioned with the oil injected Merc's (specifically ours is a 115 '02 saltwater merc) to use only the Quicksilver oil. He mentioned a couple of brands that were not a good idea (Caltex and one other i 'think' but dont quote me on that one) as they can dissolve the epoxy that holds some magnet onto the oil level sender. I know thats really vuage, but i trust what the mechanic said, and i dont believe that he was on the 'buy authentic bandwagon'. he mentioned both some that do and dont work, but we just get the quicksilver stuff to be safe - about $22 for 3.8L...

I always like when this discussion comes up.

Here is what I have to say. TCW3 is the minimum requirement for 2 stroke oil. Cheaper brands (Less expensive) do indeed meet the requirements but do not necessarily exceed it.
The expensive brands exceed the requirements.

Now...after this has been said. Make your choice.

TMD

I cant ever keep from posting when this question comes up, Ive always wanted to say! " I suppose you use the cheapest oil you can buy in your car and truck too"! Boat engines run harder than any car or truck engine (Except maybe racing)! Why not use the best you can afford figuring the price of repairs to an outboard!

Hasbeen
