Brass Sink, clean or replace?

I have a 1969 Whitcraft and swear the sink hasn't been cleaned since the boat was made. I am wondering if I should replace or try and clean this thing. It's VERY tarnished (or whatever the term for brass is) and stained. I have tried standard bathroom cleaners and even Comet and it doesn't even put a dent in the filth.

You all have been great with all the information, can I get some opinions on this one please?

Re: Brass Sink, clean or replace?

If it is brass you would be crazy to do anything but polish it. (if i may say) Brasso polish is the best stuff I have seen to bring back the shine.
I would even go as far as removing it and having it polished if need be. It would be gorgeous once polished out.
If it were mine I would get the shine back then have it clear powder coated to protect it. I would love to see a picture of it.

Hi drewpster....powder coating can be done in clear? This would open up options for me as well. Thanks.

Yes Virginia! There is such a thing as clear powder coat. I just found this out myself yesterday when I was checking out some parts I am having done.

PeninsulaPaul, Is the sink faucet brass or the sink itself?
BTW- You are doing my dream restoration, I expect a thread and details on your houseboat immediately.:) we need pictures!

Drewpster, I have more pictures but have to find my card reader. She is out of the water now, pressure washed and getting measured for engines. The inside is much cleaner. Once she goes in the water I am hooking her up to electricity to see what still works and what doesn't, that should be a fun day...lol.

I believe the sink AND faucet are brass.

By the way I named her "La Otra Mujer" because I spend so much time on her and refer to her in the female sense that my wife says it's like competing with a girlfriend, hence "La Otra Mujer", spanish for "The Other Woman".
