Almost positive I know the answer but would like confirmation. A CR unit is CR because of the way it shifts. Meaning a STD or CR is determined by
how the control cables are installed. The upper gear set dosent know the difference because of the cone clutch.?

Correct.
Bravo Drives are bi-directional.
Rotation direction is simply determined by the shift cable direction
and no damage will take place by reversing the running direction
or by installing the Bravo drives on different sides. Again, the RH propeller is
usually installed on the starboard side and the LH propeller is usually
installed on the port side.

What are you up to? Working on a bravo right now?

Bear in mind that with standard (RH) rotation in forward gear, the "bottom gear" in the upper drive unit housing is the main driven gear and is being pushed downwards on the drive housing making reliability typically better overall.
With LH rotation the "upper gear" is being lifted up towards the top cap which could become a weak point but mostly in high performance setups. Here's some info about the weak points if interested, http://www.go-fast.com/bravo_drive_failures.htm

When testing a new motor the port motor locked up solid. determined the trouble was in the drive, input shaft locked solid.
had to make a tool from threaded bolts and section of 3/4 gas pipe.removed the U joint and the input shaft. On this particular one the U joints do not remove like alpha.
Removed the C clips and tried a clamp, no go. Tried agressive hammering with a steel drift, no go.
The cup does not move enough to pop out Ended cutting the U joint, remove the joint and inputshaft, then drift out the cups.
Using the threaded rod and gas pipe, I removed the input shaft with great difficulty. 3 teeth were broken, gouged the casing and what was left imbedded itself in the input bearing and locked it up solid.
This all happened cruising at 3000. So go figure.

Takes the fun out of it when they seem to break for no apparent reason.:(

Here's a quick video of a bravo upper housing being disassembled for you if interested. Yours is the newer style retainer nut for the input shaft though, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P1CyAH9wasI

I know, thats how there supposed to come apart but not this one. Pretty sure the gear chip got between the roller and the race and expanded the race.
Will know more once I disect it with pics.
