Bravo 3 gear lube change gone wrong

I've been servicing my outdrive and doing all the maintenance on my boat for the past 8 years, but yesterday I made a silly mistake. I drained the gear oil, cleaned the overflow reservoir, and proceeded to refill the outdrive. I always fill the outdrive until oil comes out of the vent hole, re-install the plug, and continue filling until the overflow reservoir gets filled as well. That's exactly what I did yesterday too, except I forgot to remove the cap from the overflow reservoir. The cap wasn't screwed on tight, it was just sort of placed on top, but it somehow managed to seal enough to build up enough pressure to cause the hose to slide off from my gear lube pump and dump oil everywhere.

I pray that I didn't damage any of the seals, but I don't want to take any chances, so I am currently draining the outdrive once again, and I will pressure test it according to the service manual. Once strange thing I noticed, is that the oil isn't draining very well from the overflow reservoir, even though the drive is almost empty. Any ideas what could be causing that?
