Most Ace or Stanley hardware stores have a decent selection of stainless fastners. Around here Lowes also has a much better stock of stainless hardware than Home depot.

They are NOT stainless steel. They are chrome plated brass. The reason is a stainless nut on a stainless stud will eventually gaul (sp) and sieze together. The brass won't do that

Sure, if they carry them!

But you may have to do something silly, like "CHECKING" with the one you actually go to and ask if they have them.

Or, you could go to your local Merc dealer and pick them up.

Just checked a couple of the nuts on the brand new boats here. They are stainless. Wonder if they're swapping them out at the factory???

How did you check them? They LOOK like stainless, try grinding one and look at the bare metal.

Took a triangular file to one of the corners on the flats, notched it about 1/16 deep. No sign of brass. I'm assuming it should be industrial hard chrome a couple of mills thick?

Wow, that was timely. I was all set to pick up some stainless nylox ones for my alpha Monday morning. Thanks, Don.

So can I use stainless or go to the merc dealer and get the chrome plated brass nuts?

You can use either. But when the SS nyloc siezes to the stud, you will have to buy a new stud and nut.

If Merc specs the plated brass I would use them. A galled nut (galling is like cold welding) would really make your day much more interesting! I'll pull a couple of new ones Monday and cut them up a little deeper.

Actually it'll be Thursday. I'm traveling Monday through Wednesday. I'm interested to see what they are.

Why do you even want to replace them?

one of mine is really corroded, so I figured instead of buying one buy the set.
