Re: Bravo 3 very slow into forward gear

I have a 2002 Cobalt 226 with a 6.2 and Bravo 3. I had a shifting problem also. Mine was getting very hard to shift from N. to Foward. My mechanic replaced the shift cable and then found that the shift plate in the upper part of the outdrive had gotten corroted and was causing most of my problem.

Good Luck

Sorry to here about your drive doing that to you. I am just curious what year is your drive, and what is that going to cost? And did you buy an extended warranty?:)

It's actually a 1999, no warranty, $600-$1,000. I just hope this takes care of it for good.

Luckily, my shift plate, cone clutch, gears, etc all seem to be OK.

Looks like my mechanic was right. He cleaned (sand-blasted) the inside of the drive, cleaned it out, reassembled it, and (so far) everything is working fine. What a strange problem to have. I'm glad it's fixed.

Re: Bravo 3 very slow into forward gear

My bravo3 gettin ready to go in shop, for the fifth time over this problem. these kinda problems can really frustrate a man! ive got all mechanics stumped, and im havin the exact same problem! did yours shift fine into forw
the first time after start up? every time i start the engine, it shifts great, the 1st time! I am praying that soon I wont have to even think about this!!!
P.S. was your boat still under warranty? mine just expired, but ive had a similar problem before. The upper gear set was replaced in 2007, under warranty! sounds like its time to ruffle some feathers @ mercruiser and searay! WISH ME LUCK YALL!

Good luck. I hope they get you taken care of. I know how frustrating this can be. My boat is WAY past warranty. Cost me $560. Not to bad- since it seems to be fixed. Also- mine did used to shift a little better at first- and it got worse as the boat and drive warmed up. I think they would have noticed if you had the same problem as me since they had to disassemble your drive to replace the gear set. Maybe Mercruiser will just replace your drive. I would demand that if mine were under warranty and had been in the shop five times for the same thing.

Let us know how it turns out.
