Bravo II drive questions

Hey all,

I'm looking at a '91 Bayliner 3058, and thought something seemed strange with the drive -- take a look:

It looks to me like there should be something between the drive and the transom -- maybe a gasket of some type?

Thanks!

Thanks for the reply. What specifically indicated that it's rotted?

Re: Bravo II drive questions

looks like a big gap between the transom and the outer transom plate. could be the picture... but that transom plate has been off for some reason or another.....

And transom plates seldom come off..... when they do its usually either some kind of impact damage, transom plate rot, or transom rot itself.

ask the owner to float it :D

Re: Bravo II drive questions

Thanks again.
The seller claims that there was damage due to electrolysis and the drive wasn't in terrible shape, but they had it reconditioned and replaced the prop and rams. They also say that it will require a new Bravo II housing (not sure if they mean the drive or the gimbal housing).

Re: Bravo II drive questions

I can see an easy $8,000 worth of damage (parts and labor) to the gimbal ring, gimbal housing, and drive housing. With the drive that far from the transom, the transom has to be rotted too. Only way the nuts would pull thru. That would be a couple grand more for repairs.
Now, if you are getting it for a VERY good price and you have access to good used parts, and feel like pulling the engine and rebuilding the transom, and have the special tools to rebuild the drive. I would also suggest you run away from that boat.

Re: Bravo II drive questions

I don't really see anything on the gimbal ring from just that picture. But who knows from looking at just that pic. The gimbal housing isn't even close to the transom, and supposedly the engine is attached to the inner transom shield. So that means the whole inner transom plate has moved aft that amount with the engine attached ?????????????? How can that happen.
IF the bolts all rotted thru from electrolisis, I would guess anything in the water is now sponge material, and not aluminum.

I'm wondering, since the seller said that it needs a new housing, and that they reconditioned the drive, if they reassembled things loosely to make it easier to replace the housing. Here's a pic from the inside:

And one of the port side:

Re: Bravo II drive questions

impossible to tell from those pics.....

Just looking at the transom I'd pass on the boat. Even if you got it for nuttin with the trailer.... If you can't do the work yourself, and if your not getting parts at wholesale.... its a butt load of money.

Besides.... It's a bayliner.

See if you can find yourself a nice Larson.

Larsons are definitely nice boats, but I haven't seen a 28-30 footer with a flying bridge (my preference), besides the fact that they are way out of my price range.

Thanks for all the insight. Does anyone else have anything else to add? achris?

Thanks!

My post has 'nothing' in it because I did write a lot, posted it, then realized I was wrong.... Can't delete posts here, so all I could do, was what I did... Sorry for the confusion...

FWIW....
I like Bravo drives.... I don't like Bilgeliners....

Re: Bravo II drive questions

I guess I 'd like to have more info before I flushed her if I thought she might be worth the trouble . . . I'm probably just curious as the inside looks right. I agree that there is a ton of potential for additional problems, but who knows? . . . . The fact that the studs show lots of thread makes me nervous, but . . . . It would sure seem like she wasn't in the water like that for very long if at all. Maybe they messed her up out of the water? It almost looks like somebody removed all of the inside nuts to remove the drive with the gimbal housing attached and then tried to reinstall the drive the same way and it all got hung up and they just left it hanging out. I would be very concerned about the condition of the gimbal housing stud threads at a very minimum; I am sure there is a ton of other stuff wrong too. Doesn't seem like she'd even float very long as is though which is why I am still curious . . .

Where are you? Can you get somebody else to look at her?

Did anybody else notice the pair of Bennett's, pair as in two sets of two = four . . . I don't think I have seen that before . . .
