I copied right from the Merc serv manual above in post #11 and anyone who has changed their own gear lube on a unit that has a bottle will attest that lube will continue to flow upward and fill into the bottle past the vent hole.

OK Thanks for your help.This time I will just fill in the balance from the resovior with the drive in the down position when I put it in the water this weekend. I'll run it awhile then recheck. Next time I will do it with drive down vent closed and cap off.
