Re: bravo

That little bit of corrosion indicates that the props weren't removed very often and lubed with SP101 or 2-4-C etc. Little or no maintenance maybe?.

The broken pieces look very fresh. Was it dropped?

This tool from here at iBoats

is used there to remove and install the driveshaft bearing retainer. I don't think you would break one or more of the "ears like that removing or installing the retainer. It looks like an impact break...

it looks like it was fresh to me also.. I did not drop it.. the shaft spins like it supposed to. I also checked the upper gears by taking off the top plate and they look brand new...

Re: bravo

The first picture show a rear bearing carrier in excellent condition, no worries there. Just wipe off the propshafts a little, and apply a good waterproof grease when you put the props back on, no problems.
The second picture is indeed troubling. I don't exactly know what it means, but it's not supposed to be that way. Maybe DonS will view the pics and let us know how that happens, other than dropping the drive.

the guy i got it from said he didnot realize it was like that... It was on a stand when i got it and the part was broken on the bottom part of it so sitting up right you could not see it... I dont think it is a big problem just needs to be replaced its a bearing nut i think

Re: bravo

It may not hurt anything at all. I would (sort of) want to know what broke it off though.
It appears that the U-joint-knuckle might bend far enough to touch and if the drive fell over just right it could contact one of the "ears" maybe?

That little bit of corrosion on the shafts will clean up easily and is certainly no concern once cleaned up but it might tell you that the drive sat in salt water for a period of time if theres any other evidence of corrosion.

The only other concern might be the ratio (I can't remember what you said it is). If it's a 2.20 and you're going to put it behind a carbed 454 (with a 4600 max rpm) it's going to be somewhat slow at WOT unless you put 30p props on it (the highest pitch available)

If you do a some engine mods and run it at 5000, you'll pick it up.

I don't know how efficient the 30's are compared to the lower pitch props. They usually seem match up the drives and engines to use 24-26p props.
(The 26p props work perfectly on my 211 and I have a 1.81 upper)

Re: bravo

Look do you have to have a gasket in between the gimbal housing and the bravo upper housing when you mount it?

Re: bravo

Bravo's do not have a gasket between the drive and the gimbal.

There's a couple of small O-rings that do all the sealing required.

Re: bravo

I think you can see the procedure in the Mercury #11 manual.

This is what usually comes in a drive install kit. Depending on the year model you may not use all of them.

A transom service kit will usually have all the bellows', and gimbal bearing as well as the O-rings...

The service manual should have pretty good pics too.

Trust me, that drive has NOT sat in salt water. Maybe not even in fresh water much. That "corrosion" on the shafts is more likely just old grease that has broken down. Mine looked 10x worse than that, and it merely wiped off with a rag.

As far as the ratio and props go, just bolt up what you have and try it once. You can get 30p "cupped" props from Mercruiser now, which sort of makes tham a 31p.
Or you could change the lower unit only and have a slightly different ratio than a 2.2 or 2.0.

Re: bravo

In the case of those shafts, I would start with a bare cotton rag first. Then if any remains, I would try a cotton rag dipped in a mild solvent of your choice. As long as the areas where the tapered washers sit are clean, the rest of those shafts can be covered and it won't matter. Clean those areas, the splines, and the threads, and then put a good waterproof grease on the shafts (you don't need grease in the threads, though) and you'll be fine.

Re: bravo

If you decide you want a set of 30p props, you might have a look on ebay. Getting a set of BIII props from Merc is going to cost you about double of what you can find there. (I've seen good 30's close at around $400)

There's usually several sets of props (20-30p) there ranging from $400-700 new/used/etc.

The price seems to always be a little higher as summer approaches....which makes sense I guess... I bought a set of (new) 26's for $600 (shipped)

By all means try what you have (if you have props now)... I seem to remember you said you'll be using a 454. If it's similar to mine, and it's a Thunderbolt V ignition system you'll "rev-limit" at around 4700. With a 2.2:1 drive and 24p props you'll top that Lib out at about 45 mph (I got 55 with 24p up against the rev limiter)

That will definitely give you a good starting point.....

I don't know why I said Thunderbolt II. Mine is a Thunderbolt V system, It will not turn more than 4700.

I guess you could rebuild, balance and otherwise trick the engine to turn what ever you want. You'd probably have to use a different ignition module though...
