I am having my powerhead rebuilt and I wanted to know if there is a break in period for it. It is a 1990 Evinrude 150 and at WOT it is 5600-5800 RPM.
Thanks in advance,

Marty

Re: Break in period for rebuilt powerhead?

The exact proceedure will be determined by what clearances the machinist used. If he uses the EXACT clearances / tolerances / specs that OMC used, you can follow their proceedures. If he's done anything differently, he's going to have to specify. That includes cutting anything off the decks or heads.

Make sure the carbs got cleaned.

Make sure you get a complete cooling system service.

Make sure you get written instructions from the rebuilder. Follow them to a T.

Above all, make sure you find - and correct - the reason the powerhead had to be rebuilt. A damaged piston is not a cause. It's a result.

Re: Break in period for rebuilt powerhead?

I just had the boat serviced when we (my mechanic)noticed the damage. The water baffle gasket had failed and was leaking water into a cylinder which scored it pretty bad. When he replaced the impeller, the water pressure was high and the leaking gasket was very obvious. He is going to clean and check the carbs and put on a new fuel pump.

where would I find the instructions/procedures you just mentioned.

Thanks again,

Marty
