I'm sure this has been posted before but I couldn't find it in a search. I have a remaned 4.3 and want to know how I should operate it to break it in properly. Particularly, when can I pull a tube or wake boarder?

Merc info under manuals. But if you are running "flat tappets", it is really recomended to run zinc with whatever oil you are using! Not just once, for quite a few oil changes.

Check with your re-manufacturer.

What is "zinc" to be added to the oil?
Already checked with the remanufacturer, they were no help with specifics.
This is a tow boat that never gets many hours. I'll be all season putting 10-20 hours on it. The kids want to get tubing and boarding now that summer is here.

The additive is ZDDP and is difficult to find any more. Most modern oils have different additives that take its place and work well. I would just use a high quality, name brand oil and not worry about it. Give the engine an hour or two of varying loads and speeds and you will be good to go. A low time engine like that is going to last years even if you aren't perfect in your breakin procedure. Geez, look at how the same car engines are abused and still last years and years.

I had a 4.3LX rebuilt several years ago and had the same question. Here's the link to the post. This worked very well and when I found my original owner's manual (1995 Bayliner 2050), this was the same break-in procedure for a new motor.

Zinc makes oil stick to metal. Lifter to camshaft most important. Lucas break-in oil additive is available I know at Advanced Auto. Couldn't get at Auto Zone. Didn't try anywhere else. But it is out there.
It's only really important to engines w/flat tappets. The newer roller rockers don't need it.

google, zinc oil additives

Re: Break-in Procedure

I assume this engine has NEW flat tappet lifters and cam?If so proceed..Use oil with zinc(No synthetic)..With the distributor removed,Prime the oil pump.I used a old screwdriver cut off and inserted into my dewalt drill.Spin on high till ya get oil at top of engine(Oil will flow out of push rods,Make sure there is oil coming out of every push rod.It may take a couple minutes if you planning on using 20/50w Valvoline racing oil.Properly breaking in an engine requires running it without a load for 30-45 minutes. During this time, the engine should run around 2,000 rpm, occasionally varying the rpm between 1,500 and 2,500. However, the engine shouldn't be allowed to idle because the oil pump isn't spinning fast enough to provide enough oil pressure at those low rpm levels.Once you complete the break-in of cam,run it like ya stole it.Good luck

Re: Break-in Procedure

So is there any harm pulling a wake boarder or a tube early on in this break-in period? I'm not going full out for either.

Put some time on that engine before doing any tubing! I know it's a MAJOR inconvenience but how much money did you put into it?

Properly breaking in an engine requires running it(Engine) without a load for 30-45 minutes
