Ive been trying to find a happy setting for my point. so far I can't seem to find a good place.
I do notice that my breaker plate is loose. I can rotate the plate back and forth and I think the may be the cause of my rough running.

If I set my point to .20 I can rotate the breaker plate then the points will be out of spec to .24

Is there a bushing that holds the plate in spec?

The breakerplate should be able to rotate to advance the timing when reving up.
It is controled by the sparkadvance rod which is connected to the timingtower and to the throttle..

The gap of the points is set when it is at highest point of the camcurve, then it would not open up the gap anymore then 020 as it is the spec. for the points.

The breakerplate is hold in place by 4 or 5 (do not remember exactly) screws which is screw to the magneto stator ring.
I think there is a bushing in the breakerplate, but not quite sure because I have not worked with these 35, 45 , 55Hp in a while.

The Link below = parts. I would think there has to be a mount for the base plate with bushings and Etc that a search or manual will show. A close inspection of the actual motor should show the same. Since it rotate to advance. Do you have a Clymer Manuel or etc.???

Nordin, Jerry or other experienced will have experienced help soon. I have not experienced this on my 1970 35 HP Chrysler. BUT! I feel if you r points? gaps are changing the magneto plate is shifting vs rotating

You are correct. it's more of a shifting issue. I pulled the breaker plate, The lower plate (magneto stator ring) that the breaker plate screws to is loose. Seems like there should be a bushing in there some place. or perhaps severely wore out.

The magneto stator ring is mounted under the crankshaft bearingcage (#3 in exploadschema). It will be loose and able to rotate. It is aligned by the breakerplate bushing around the crankshaft. Then the screws from breakerplate to the magneto stator ring will clamp (with a little lash so it is able to rotate smoothly ) the whole assembly.
