Any one out there knows how to adjust Breaker points on a 1972 25Hp Johnson? I rebuild the carb and got the motor started. It ran but missed every few seconds and jerked around in the tank. I decide to pull the flyweel and look at the points. Sure enough, the gap on one point was visually wider than the other. I used a post on Iboat and the tread said to adjust to .020. I followed the tread and know, the motor wont start. It will ignite enough to send smoke from the exhaust but wont run on its own. Not sure if timing is now too late or too early. The tread said to ignore the TOP setting. Just aling the drive shaft key with the rubber peice on the point and set the gap. Any one knows if this will work?

Use the TOP marking if it's there. Some motors do not have the marking on the cam, so the drive key is used in those cases.

the TOP mark is there but it is impossible to align it since the other mark is on the other side of coil about 4 inches away. I would probably need some special tool. If the key is ok to use, then why is it not running? Is it supposed to be .030 or .020?
